Jets let Connor and Laine go through offersheets

Description
While it would probably take 4 1sts to actually walk away from an offersheet, especially for Laine I wanted to see what the Jets could look like if they decided to just let it happen. 2020's draft is supposed to be 3 rounds deep so having 9 picks would really set us up for the future. Especially with 3 more 1st round picks the following year. Lots of room and ammunition to add rentals at the deadline if we think we'll be a playoff team.

Sign Zuc because he's a PoMo guy and play him on the top line, reuniting Perreault - Little - Ehlers that looked great when they played together 2 years ago when Scheif got hurt. Still have the checking line of Copp Lowry with Roslovic slotting in for Tanev but we could afford to bring Tanev back if we wanted to. Let Vesalainen break in on the 4th line and then move him up the lineup when injuries occur.

The D is very young but with $8M in cap space we could make a move there if we wanted to taking on a high cap guy vet on a short deal if a team finds itself in a bind.

I actually like it a lot more than I thought I would and would be totally ok if this is how it played out. Maybe just trading Laine for 3 1st rounders to meet half way if he wanted to play elsewhere.

I appreciate this thought process and post so much! I love the outside the box thinking and the looking towards the future in this post!

IMO - Laine would need to get the 4 1st's to let him go, but with the restructuring that the Jets need this offseason i think they put themselves in a great spot by considering this!

Wow, I cant imagine WPG would let go of both Laine & Connor.
I'm surprised fans would be on board with this, even with the compensation picks its really a tough stretch to give up on 2 great players in hopes that one of those picks turns into a player like one of these 2 guys.

That's a way to make the team better. In effect trading Laine and Connor for 4 firsts, two seconds, two thirds, and cap space to sign other players. But it's also the reason teams don't make offer sheets. Better to keep your picks and cap to sign other players.

I'm surprised by how I felt as well but the key really was adding in a top 6 guy in Zuccarello. Without him it doesn't look nearly as good. My preference would be to keep our guys, but I just wanted to peek to see what it would look like if we said "if they don't want to be here, you can have them". I was thinking about trying to get a couple extra 2nds or 3rds for next year because of the strength of the draft and then thought why not mock it out to see?

Also, I think most of Connor's production is because of 55 & 26 because the 10+ games he played away from them he scored zero points. Laine I think is going to be a beast, but right now he lacks strength for board battles and explosiveness in his first few steps. He's a liability in the defensive zone. All that stuff is correctable and that's what most players are working on in the minors at this point. You can't teach that shot and with his size once he gets his man strength watch out.
