2016-2017 No Shaw

Created by: bhawks30
Team: 2016-17 Chicago Blackhawks
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 22, 2016
Published: Jun. 22, 2016
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Prioritizing D for one year over Shaw long-term keeps team competitive and allows us to extend Panarin. A Shaw contract that is on the books for 3(ish) million would make signing Panarin nearly impossible.

After the year, Kempny takes Campbell’s spot and Pokka is ready to play on the 3rd pairing with either Gus or TVR, the other of the two could easily be lost in expansion draft.

Team looks to lack scoring depth this year, and you can’t expect the Panarin-Kane line to replicate what they did last year. Must have greater offensive contributions from Toews and Hossa for this team to return to the Cup.

I do like the 3rd checking line, however the 4th is a toss-up. Tons of speed and skill on that line, but very young.

Rosy is brought back for Kempny, helping him with the transition into North American Hockey, as Anisimov and Tikhonov did for Panarin last year.

don't understand the Campbell move, looks like 3rd-4th line depth is sorely lacking on the wings. signing someone like Upshall or Chris Stewart can balance that out.

What's not to like about the Campbell move? Still one of the best puck moving defenseman in the league and has expressed his desire to play here. Comes in for 1 year at a discount, serves as a bridge until Pokka is fully ready and plays as a much more reliable partner for Seabs than TVR or Gus were. Kempny will be solid but I don't feel great about putting him in a second pairing right off the bat. Campbell's one year deal helps Kempnys development, too. I forgot to include the Shaw trade, simply because it didn’t change this team. We can’t take on any additional salary regardless so it’s going to have to be for picks. Not opposed to signing a proven bottom 6 winger that could score a little bit more than a Baun/Motte/Desjardins would. Either way, a Shaw deal does not look likely if we value Panarin's future.
