Change Marner to 5 years x 12 mill and Rantanen to 7 years at 8.5. Marner is the best winger in the NHL this century

As already mentioned above, I don't think there is anyway that Colorado can get away with offersheeting Mitch Marner for that kind of money and then signing Mikko Rantanen for over $3 million less.

Obviously, in this scenario, Rantanen signs and then Marner is offersheeted. If 12.5M is the number I don't see Toronto matching. Colorado is a talented team, and the first two 1st rounders are likely to be late, but after that with Makar, Landeskog, and others looking for raises and the goaltending spot opening wide up it could get chaotic.

It all has to do with who signs first. For an offersheet to work, Marner would have to be above 12M. Rantanen to a 5 year deal would work since cap will always go up, will allow him to make more next signing. Yes Rantanen is a great player, Ideally he will sign before an offersheet is made and he should be satisfied with below 10M. Also Marner should get more than Rantanen comparing the points over 3 seasons. Not 3M difference just the way signing a player works and offersheets are.

Glad you see where I was coming from MacerV. Agree would be hard next year but cap will go up to 83 probably and they would need to look at moving a couple players and hope some young ones can step in. Not resigning Wilson and Nieto is a start and Calvert the following year. Its all workable.

I think it really depends on how the team performs in the first two years. If Makar lights it up and guys like Werenski get paid this summer, then Colorado could easily be looking at $12M++ between Makar & Girard which will really tighten the belt a bit with Grubuar, Landeskog, and Jost also looking for considerable raises. Could always move Donksoi, Burakovsky, or Johnson at that point though.
