Doesn’t work that way. To go on LTIR the team must provide medical proof from a doctor that says he is physically unable to play. Backes played almost 80 games last year and didn’t suffer a concussion, no way the bruins could fake that.

Not sure if you've suffered numerous concussion like him, but the effects show up at any random time, from head aches to memory loss to anger. Bright lights or like practicing at a rink with a wall of glass facing the sun may cause him to think about taking a year off to let the brain rest.
