I think Pominville is on record saying that he's only signing a PTO in Montreal or Buffalo due to familial reasons.

Yes and no. His signing would make the already redundant Chiasson signing even more redundant, which really looks bad on Holland for offering Chiasson a two year deal.

but it would make the team better so i could care less about chiasson for this season (although im disapointed that he was given 2m for 2yrs)

I see Chiasson's contract much the same way. Hopefully Tippett can make use of him this year at least.

The thing I'm hoping for most: that Neal rebounds and scores like 30. This will allow Holland to trade him next summer for something of value / much lower cap hit.

Yeah I wouldn't have signed him period. Was really hoping they'd have flipped him for something last deadline, but here we are.

I kinda got into this with someone yesterday over the idea of the Oilers acquiring Petan for a late pick: yes it makes the team better, but by how much is important. Pominville has some wicked underlying metrics that suggests he's still an effective scorer at his age, but is he solving the problem with Edmonton's forward group? Unless everyone has another career year a la 2017 and Pominville delivers, it's going to be the difference between picking 5th in the draft and 7th. This is not going to be an outwardly great year for the Oilers: there are some ridiculously good forward prospects available in this years' draft and if Holland has any intention of undoing the mess of previous regimes, another lottery pick is the cheapest way to get there. This year, I want little to no upward movement for this team. Absolutely nothing warrants it: there are 13 expiring deals on this roster, and I'd wager that only about 5 of those players actually warrant full-time NHL deployment. The bad deals that still weigh this team down and stench of managements past that still linger remain.

Ideally, everyone (barring the RFA defencemen) that has an expiring deal this year is flipped. Late round picks, B- or C-prospects, doesn't matter. Overhaul the entire thing and bring up the Condors to finish the year. Give the kids the proper icetime they need, give them a taste of the bigs, then send them back to California for a glory run. Reset the whole damn thing. And if it means a greater stab at Lafreniere, it's worth it in my eyes.

There's only one way through the mess we're in; the greater the advantage at the draft, the sooner this team gets to where it should have already been.
