Perhaps...However, my rationale behind this deal was there would be the opportunity to pull in some assets for Schenn in the off-chance he decides New Jersey is not where he wants to be. Perhaps Schenn can push his ceiling on a line with Jack Hughes or Nico Hischier.

As a Blues fan, I've heard Schenn wants to be a top-6 center in the future. NJ can't give that to him.

pietrangelo and dunn have extensions coming up next season--minimum 8.5 and 5.5, respectively--plus bouwmeester and edmundson need short-term deals or replacement. that's 14m in salary going out and about 18m coming back in--net increase around 4m in cap space to cover those holes. blues just can't add 10m to that payroll. hell they probably don't even have the space to add schenn to that team when you have thomas and schwartz and binnington in the next offseason, although bozak and steen and allen come off the books to balance that.

i'd love to have hall on this team but i don't think there's a cap situation that works unless there's more salary headed to jersey now. something like an edmundson or allen to make the numbers work.
