CLAUSE DETAILS: Modified NTC: Starting 2020-21, Submits a list of 19 teams he can be traded to. 2022-23 was updated to a NMC when he signed his extension on Sept 20, 2022
Definitely was when that comment was made, definitely not now with 1 year left.
You’re right. They should have signed him for 8 years, not 7. What was Sakic thinking?
Seriously though, this was a bit of bad luck on timing for MacKinnon. If you remember when this contract was signed, he was coming off a couple of disappointing seasons, and though he wasn’t yet 21, some people were wondering if he was ever going to become the superstar he was expected to be and ultimately became. Obviously he would have been better off with a bridge deal, but I’ll never fault a player for giving up a chance at bigger money in favour of the certainty of a long-term contract. You only get one career, and you never know what might happen.
Next contract he can have both money and term, if that’s what he wants.
