AKA: a not-so-serious look at potential Oilers summer moves
Enjoy.
Trade #1: cleaning up the Lucic mess
Trade #2: Dubas was GM for Darnell Nurse's Soo Greyhounds junior team, and in Nurse's 2nd season Dubas brought in Sheldon Keefe as Head Coach. They love the player, and needing defense and toughness on their Leafs team, target him in the summer. He'll sign an 8 x $6.25M deal with them. I'll argue that Nurse's value is higher than either Kapanen or Johnsson, but less than both together, so I added a 3RD to the deal. Add picks to flavour.
Trade #3: Neal scores 30 goals, GM's see the CGY year as an anomoly rather than a sign of decline. Shero trades Hall during the season and decides not to give Simmonds an extension, so he needs a guy like Neal who can be a veteran presence in the room and also score goals from the doorstep on the PP. NJ has plenty of cap space and McLeod isn't showing much in his 2 years in AHL.
Trade #4: suggested by AJP_18 in this thread: https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/290169 - Sheahan is a UFA so I substituted Chiasson.
Trade #5: Detroit is potentially losing 4 NHL defensemen this summer to free agency and could use a shutdown defenseman on the cheap. He carries a $4M cap hit for 1 year (Detroit has plenty of space) but this deal happens after July 1st bonus is paid, meaning Russell is owed just $1.5M for the last year of his deal - exactly what Glendening earns.
Trade #6: Graves is hot right now but I think it's a bit of a mirage: he hasn't scored 0.40 P/GP since he was an overager in QMJHL, not even in the AHL. However, Graves also has arbitration rights which may make his next deal richer than Sakic would like. COL's blueline is getting crowded, too, and they need to make room for Byram. JP is well disliked on this board, but he's leading his team in points, CF%, CFC%, GF% in a league that is basically equivalent to the AHL, and he's just 21. He's one of the best forwards in the league defensively AND he's generating offense at a very high rate also. Best player on the best team - if your team had a 21-year-old that was doing that in the AHL you'd all be praising him up and down.
Signing Notes:
- Bear's deal is almost exactly Ryan Ellis' 2nd contract. Seems to be a pretty good comp in size and style. Ellis probably has a little more offensive upside though.
- After 2018-19 Anderson was worth a 5 x $5.25 deal or thereabouts, but his 2019-20 campaign is horrid so far. This deal is based on him recovering somewhat (although it's too late for him to score 27 again), so I knocked about a mil off what I thought he was worth.
- Kassian is a similar player to Anderson but is having a much better season. He seems to have regained his confidence and it playing extremely well. I've given him less money and term than Anderson due to age and the fact that he's clearly being zoomed by McDavid. Having traded for Anderson and having Lavoie waiting in the wings gave Kass less leverage, too. If this needs to be $3M x 3, I have the cap space.
- I like Kreider for his size and speed, but he's on pace for 40 points this year and has only (barely) broken 50 twice in his career, so please stop with projecting him at $7M+. His nearest comps are Tatar (4 x 7.07%), Nyquist (4 x 6.75%) and Silfverberg (5 x 6.60%). For the sake of argument we'll take the middle number: $84M cap x 6.75% is $5.67M, we'll round it up to $5.75M.
