Description
After an arbitration award of $5.5M for Tyson Barrie the Avs decide to trade him straight up for Nugent-Hopkins. Then the Oilers acquire Krejci along with the Oilers 2017 2nd round pick they previously had to give up for Chiarelli for Sekera and Letestu. With their pick back in their possession they sign Lindholm to a offer sheet at a whopping $7.3M AAV for 8 years. With nearly $20M tied up in 8 D-men, the Ducks reluctantly take the two 1sts, 2nd and a 3rd rather than match the offer. With Lindholm, Barrie, Larsson and Klefbom in the fold the Oilers have one of the best top 4 in the league and one of the most expensive. Trading for Krejci gives the Oilers a veteran centre who brings leadership and great 2-way ability. Moving Letestu opens the door for Lander to finally secure the 4th line centre position. If he falters then Hendricks is more than capable of playing that role.

I like your thinking but if you trade Sekera then the Ducks match the offer sheet then what? Is Lindholm worth $7.3 per? I don't know.

Offer sheet compensation is based on the average annual salary or the entirety of the contract divided by 5, which ever is higher. 7.3x7=51.1 mill/5=10.22 cap hit for offer sheet compensation. Seeing as the Oilers can't offer 8 years and the compensation for that cap hit at the max 7 years will be 4 firsts. The max deal for 2 firsts that Edm can offer is about 6.65 mill a year for 7 years.

The Krejci trade is a joke. As for the offer sheet, Edm already got burned once on offer sheeting Dustin Penner.
