What would also be horrible is keeping Clarkson's and Hartnall's contracts. It cost a blue chip prospect for Chicago to get out from one anchor contract.

Throwing in Roslovic might be an overpayment. Giving up a promising first rounder plus taking on close to $10m in dead weight contracts is an expensive way to get a top 4 defender.

Hold on TrueNorth. Hartnell is a very good player. He has value. Murray played every game last year. So the injuries are a non issue. No discount. He would require a package of high prospects and a young established NHL level player.

Ok, so the Jets offer Petan and Roslovic as high prospects and Jacob Trouba as your young established NHL level player for Murray. Overpayment IMO but I'll play along. Columbus is still hooped seven ways to Sunday because they wont be able to protect a player like Atkinson, Jenner or Wennberg in expansion and can't afford to pay prospects coming off ELCs for the next three years, let alone dabble in free agency.

$35 million per season tied up in Clarkson, Foligno, Dubinsky, Bobrovsky, Hartnall and Saad. Half the payroll and none of it coming of the books in the next three seasons. Wennberg, Jenner and Atkinson, Murray and Bjorkstrand contracts all come due before any of those contracts expire. I'm sure Jarmo has done the math.

Look, Clarkson will likely waive his NMC and so will Hartnell. They are no threat to being drafted.

Listen, I watch every Jackets game and I love Hartnell, but fans need to understand that he is not valuable. He is not worth his raw, on-ice production because he is 34 and has three years left on an expensive deal. Why do you think Hextall traded him away for peanuts? That is his value. No NHL GM would make a trade because he's 'still valuable'. You have to project into the future, and if you are betting that he'll still be worth 4.75 mil when he's 37, you should probably never go to the casino. He's not quite worth his contract today, let alone next year or the year after.

Furthermore, Murray has been steady and good, but he has not shown the ability to be an impact player. He does his job, he doesn't make huge mistakes. he's smart with the puck and makes good first passes, but he's not a top pairing, goal-scoring, point-producing, shut-down defenseman. He's a reliable top-4 defenseman and I believe that is his ceiling. He'll never win a Norris trophy, or even be a finalist. He is a young, highly valuable asset that the Jackets should move in order to clean up the roster. With guys like Werenski and Carlsson coming up this year or next, now is the time to make a deal like this.

Actually, Hextall traded him because of the cap situation. Umberger's contract was shorter.

I think that the point. Hartnell has no value because of his contract.
