Not well

62 defensemen in the league have played 240+ minutes vs elites (1st pairing comp). Of those, Nurse is:

12th in TOI vs elites (heavier than average usage)
36th in CF% (average 1st pair)
32nd in DFF% (average 1st pair) [DFF - dangerous fenwick for - is a weighted shot metric similar to xGF]
16th in GF% (above average 1st pair)
1st in GF (elite)
45th in GA (below average)

Here's something interesting that you probably didn't know: since the beginning of the 2017-18 season (2.5+ seasons), Nurse is top-10 in 5v5 scoring among defensemen:

1. Carlson 92
2. Burns 88
3. Josi 87
4. Rielly 82
5. Karlsson 78
6. Hamilton 72
7. Giordano 71
8. Hedman 70
9. Nurse 69
10. Barrie 68

Notice something about all these players? They're all older than Nurse, who was 22-24 during this time - not even is his prime.

Sure, and that is my point, you don't have anyone to replace Nurse, and you don't have any decent depth players up front, or on the farm, or on the right side of the defence or anywhere. I sincerely don't want you guys to get stuck in a situation where McDavid demands a trade but I honestly just don't know how you fix this disaster. The whole fact that the team hasn't won a game when McDavid or Draisaitl are kept pointless since 2017 is mind boggling.

My point is we don't NEED anyone to replace Nurse - we need to KEEP Nurse. Adding yet another LHC is a waste of time, especially at the cost of our 1st pairing D and 1st round pick. We need Nurse more than we need Domi, so why would we overpay for him? It makes no sense. Sure, a top-6 LW would be great, but we can keep Nurse and the 1st and add a top-6 LW through free agency and be FAR ahead.

Plus there are prospects in the pipeline that will push for top-4 LHD position in a couple of years, that's not an issue. Our defense is set for the future, we just can't go trading away top-pairing guys until those prospects are ready.

He plays a lot of minutes with McDavid and Draisaitl on the ice, that will skew anyone's offensive and Corsi numbers. If McDavid gets hurt those numbers would collapse.

Dream big my friend, I hope for your sake it all pans out but I have nothing but doubts. Your prospects aren't considered all that great outside of Edmonton and considering how bad your depth is, it shouldn't be hard to crack your lineup but it is. Almost zero player development seems to be present. Chiarelli did such a bad job and I have no clue how to fix this mess in less than 3 years.

I don't think you've been paying attention. Edmonton's prospect depth is top-10 in the league according to The Athletic, and their development has delivered several players this year.

The Oilers bottom six had a terrible October but since then have been running about 50% GF and delivering on the PK, which again is top-10 in the league.

Losing the best player in the world would hurt any team.

TSN disagrees and I tend to trust them over the athletic.

Yeah but TO has gone stretches without, Matthews, Tavares and Marner and still did well. If Edmonton lost both McDavid and Draisaitl, they may never win another game. It's been since 2017 since they won when those guys were held without a point. That Is just nuts

The crazy part is, they are rarely without a point. So it's moot.

5 games out of 46 so far this year. Ten percent. I'm not worried.

Come playoffs you know the whole game plan is check McDavid and if it gets tight, that is bad news because every team in the NHL has better depth than Edmonton. Every team

I was with you on this until you mentioned Yamamoto, if that is blowing you away, you should aim a lot higher.

It doesn't end there. You still have to trade us a 1st + other pieces. I just mentioned Yamamoto as the starting piece because Oiler fans seemed to be attached to him.

Wrong again. First of all McDavid's line does more checking than their opponents, so BRING IT ON.

Secondly Draisaitl (2C) is actually the more consistent scorer of the two - he has scored in all but 8 games vs 12 for McDavid - so the line of Nugent-Hopkins, Draisaitl and Yamamoto will be deadly if the opposition is focused solely on McDavid.

Third, the bottom six has been above average since their terrible October. They have a GF% of 48.92 and an xGF% of 52.68 with a .992 PDO, which is in the range of Toronto's bottom six this year: 51.95 GF% and 48.02 xGF% with a 1.016 PDO. Besides this, Edmonton's PK, which is made up primarily of bottom six players, is 2nd in the league in GA/60, Toronto's is 24th. By PK% Edmonton is 6th overall while Toronto is 25th. I'm not sure who should be more terrified, to be honest.
