They could have just signed the guy for peanuts in the offseason and now we give up AA to get him. I dont like him that much really

I think that the Wings should resign AA and keep him until the D-Core and goaltending are at an NHL level. Then AA can do his thing: use his speed to break out. AA will never excel under Blashill’s “pro-cess.” AA is a one dimensional player who will never excel in coach’s 200’ game.

It isn't about getting Gardiner so much as getting the picks. Gardiner has been miserable in comparison to his pay. He could still turn it around, but Carolina is up against the cap and may have buyer's remorse. Detroit has cap and will for a while. Detroit also needs a veteran to replace the ones aging out, but that's not the main point of the trade. I'm not seeing a ton of options for picks otherwise, and AA doesn't fit the identity that Larkin, Mantha, Bert, and Hronek (aka the core going forward) seem to be imprinting on the team.

No I get it and I don't love AA his game has obvious flaws but even with green in tow I don't think you'll get 3 picks out of Carolina.
