That’s a hell of a discount for Pettersson to take. He’s probably losing close to $30 million for signing this. This would be much more realistic if you signed someone other than Pietrangelo, and didn’t ridiculously overpay them. This team is going to be really good in 2 years though.

What about Tryamkin?, and Lockwood, Rathbone and Utanen are all in the mix.

I would say that Petterson contract is fair, and Benning is skilled at getting guys to take team discounts...look at Horvat, Boeser

He is also great at walking them straight to free agency with those contracts as well

I highly doubt Yzerman does this trade. Let's take on a cap dump and wait 2 years plus another few years for develop.

You think Petey is getting 14.25M AAV for 8 years? I love EP as much as the next guy, but he's not getting 1.75M AAV more than McDavid. Pietrangelo is an intentional overpay on a shorter term contract to land him without him being an anchor at 36. For the record I'm highly skeptical he'll come to Vancouver, even with things looking up. But I think right side D is the most concerning part of our team long-term (ie. post Tanev). So it's more just trying to find a structure that will work to enable us to fill that gap via free agency or trades since our prospects ain't gonna do it.

Seems like a decent fit given where Detroit is in their arc. Two more years after this one, and I believe he's only owed 4M in total cash (maybe 5M). What do you think it would take for Yzerman to take the contract?

I'm not banking on Tryamkin being an NHL-er, certainly no more than a 6-8 D man. Lockwood as well. I'd prefer both to be used in trades. Utunen is definitely not someone you want to plan your NHL roster around. I think Rathbone is a part of this team, and hopefully part of the core Quinn-Rathbone-Juolevi could be a nice left side for a decade.

Agreed on team discounts. For as awful as he is on July 1st, Benning seems to be good at extending players to team friendly deals. The ones you mention, and don't forget Edler! That one was probably my favourite given the implications a 3-4 year deal could have had when Quinn and Petey exit their ELCs.

2020 picks so in 3 or 4 years they should be ready for the show. Wings should be a have a playoff team by then.

Right-o. I actually meant for these to be 2020 or 2021 picks, but since it's a 2021-2022 season I don't actually know how to do that so it's more just illustrative of the intent.
