Revised Version of My Vlasic Compliance Buyout Idea

Created by: Hockyluv21
Team: 2020-21 Carolina Hurricanes
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 23, 2020
Published: Mar. 23, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Vlasic is bought out using a compliance buyout generated due to the flat cap. In exchange, the Canes acquire Labanc and a late 3rd for Mrazek, Dzingel, and McKeown. For the first time in what seems like forever, the Canes will have one right-hand shot per forward line, with Labanc, Trocheck, Necas, and Geekie all being right-handed.

Yes, I would. Trocheck and Staal gives us medium-term depth down the middle in a way that our organization hasn't seen since the Cup year in 2006. Staal's game tremendously improved, IMO, after Trocheck was acquired and Staal began playing more of a defensive-dominant game. The only issue with Staal's deal is the NMC. If Staal can waive it for Seattle, we can protect another forward or defenseman with the extra slot. Our FO could then protect the following:

7-3-1 scenario: Aho, Teravainen, Svechnikov, Foegele, Geekie, Trocheck, Labanc, Slavin, Pesce, (Fleury, UFA Hamilton, or Bean), Nedeljkovic
8-1 scenario: Aho, Teravainen, Svechnikov, Geekie, Slavin, Pesce, (Fleury or UFA Hamilton if Seattle threatens to select and sign him), Bean, Nedeljkovic
UFA: McGinn, Martinook, Hamilton, Reimer
Exempt: Necas, Keane, Kaski, Sellgren, Cotton, Filipe, Henman

Like I said before. Its a no on paying Labanc to get rid of Vlasic. The compliance buyout is free for you guys so why give a team one of our young top 9 forwards to do it? Im sure a team like Toronto would take a second to do it

Because Toronto, at least to me, should use a compliance buyout on one of their 3 $10M+ forwards. Not because those three aren't elite players, because they truly are, but rather because of how having those three deals at one time completely screws up with their overall salary structure on the team, forcing them to sacrifice quality depth beneath the roster, mainly their defense and 3rd/4th line. Removing one of Matthews, Tavares, or Marner off of the books (likely Tavares) gives them that cap breathing room that they need to actually improve the defense. The other big market clubs, like Boston, should use their comp buyouts on someone like Krejci unless they're able to sign Krug without doing so.

Still I pass on that. The sharks badly need top 6 forwards so downgrading from Labanc to Dzingel is not the answer. Its going to be very hard to get who we need through FA, so I dont want to get worse and then pray we can be better

If Tavares is bought out, though? That might be your answer, man! Remember, Tavares had narrowed down his choices to San Jose and Toronto during his UFA. He likely will come considerably cheaper, as well, considering how much buyout cash that he'll get from Toronto if they decide to buy him out. To me, if the cap is flat this offseason, it may be Doug Wilson's golden opportunity to re-work his roster without being hamstrung by bad contracts (mainly the ones given to Vlasic and Martin Jones). To me, Labanc is a very small price to pay for that magnitude of cap savings.

Not a chance Tavares is bought out. I wouldnt even dream of buying out Erik Karlsson at this point in his career and Tavares is the same situation

It's not about Tavares not being an elite player, it's about Toronto stupidly making their team so top-heavy that they lack any semblance of depth or defensive competence!
