Alexander Barabanov and the Leafs

Created by: aadoyle
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 28, 2020

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
With news that the leafs are favorites to acquire Alexander Barabanov I decided to speculate how the leafs decide how to fit him in for 2020-2021 season. I have heard of him but never thought he would be on the leafs radar. But if he does join I made him the third line RW and moved kapenan to play with matthews, put nylander on the left, and reunited the tavares line. For defense traded for weegar who has been pretty solid with the panthers on his off side so being with rielly on his dominate side could be intriguing. Also decided to save money by making engvall the 3rd line center. He played that position well with the marlies and was okay with it on the leafs so why not try it again.

Also signed SHL free agent Kinnvall, Johannes who is a young RD but has developed well and could be an excellent partner for sandin.

For goaltending things got tricky. Before I went with Bilyov but alot of people including KHL reporter Igor Eronko have stated "He's too small. And his style is kind of a batllefly. You need a very good defensive team in front ot, which Ak Bars is, so he could be effective. He's great stopping the first shot, not the second one". So moving on from him I went for another young goaltender Ivan Bocharov. His style of play is similar to anderson and his numbers in the KHL are impressive (GAA = 1.98, SV = 0.935). If he can translate over to the NHL well he could be a suitable replacement for anderson once his contract expires. So bringing him in on a 3 year entry is fair as he can play for the marlies and be brought up if they feel hes ready like what the rangers did with shesterkin.

So let me know what u think. Traded some guys out to replenish picks especially since clifford is coming back toronto will need a 2nd as replacement. Also brought in thorton and resigned spezza and clifford for some veteran presence.

is Barabanov any good? His stats this season don't wow me, but his season the year before was alright. he's also quite small. not even 160 pounds according to hockeydb if I'm looking at the right guy

hes a good depth player. Kind of small but plays like hes a foot taller. He may not be a star in the KHL but is a hard worker with a good track record. Articles on this describe him as "playing a game bigger than his size. He’s strong on his edges, competitive, and elusive in traffic/down low". So as a third line winger he should be fine. remember some small guys gerbe can be intriguing players to watch so i dont think his size will bother us.

panthers need to shed 10mill in cap as management and ownership are sick and tired of that teams lack of performance and are possibly considering a rebuild. I can tell they will be busy in the summer and acquiring cheap players is a must in order to make management and the ownership happy. Panthers would love to have kerfoot. He can play third center and will be a massive improvement over wallmark. Dermott is also an improvement over most of the panthers defense so acquiring him would also be an added bonus. Weegar is a RD and sure hes playing well on his offside but florida's defense still needs a massive overhaul as Matheson, Stralman and Yandle are all on the chopping block and need to be replaced by defenders willing to play without the puck, willing to defend in tough situations without sacrificing the ability to move the puck.

ya I don't mind a small player who plays big but u'd usually hope for better production. that being said I'd sign him as there's no risk in it

The Leafs don't need another Nic Petan. We already have 10 of those

petan was never supposed to be big from the start. Most people say WHL stats are inflated and from what i can see from his whl years to NHL there is a big shift (120 points in WHL to never reaching more than 6 in the NHL). At the same time KHL players usually have an easier time transfering over to the NHL. Some adapt better than others. Sure he may be small but his skill set and abilities are far greater than petans. At 25 years old and competing in OG, WC, etc he has proven he could be a worthy addition to any NHL team. Sadly, Petan is just an AHL player nothing wrong with that but sadly if he is ever on an NHL team it will either be on the 4th line or as a pressbox holder
TheLeafsSeason liked this.

You make my case. Easier ways to shed cap then trading Weegar. No Hoffman, Dadanov, Haula, and trading at least one of Matheson, Yandle, or Stralman.

Matheson, Yandle, or Stralman <--- Good luck with those guys (I would say Yandle has the best chance) but hes barrie but worse defensively so if a team wants some blue line offense he can help them. The other 2 oh god help them

Nope.

Kyle Clifford: Hi, Dubas. I think I'm worth less than I was on my last contract. Pay me little 'cause I like to help out the world.

Dubas: Cool. I'll just cut your salary by 2/3, how is that?

Clifford: Great, thanks!

Later that day...

Dubas: I signed a really old and slow guy to play on the fourth line. It should be good because he will bring no energy and is a solid minus player with declining skills!

Later still...

Dubas: Hey Florida, want to trade away your yound right handed dman who logged the 3rd most average TOI for you? I can give you a speedy forward that can't score, the RFA rights to a comparable dman that you don't know very well and a couple crap picks.

Tallon: Great! Can we trade you Ekblad too for an additional 6th rounder??? Please????

Man this is some troll postings. Clifford aint making more than a mill with the leafs. If he wants more hes out. He is a 4th liner and the leafs have plenty of replacements. As for florida I have already had fans tell me this trade could work out for both sides especially with florida needing to shed 10mill. I can tell your new and mostly posting troll coments so pls be respectful to others
