dont rush it

Created by: SaltyOne
Team: 2020-21 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 6, 2020
Published: Apr. 6, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Assuming the draft goes as per Tankathon and nothing crazy happens, Sens select Byfield, Stutzle and Jan Mysak. Instead of rushing these guys into the show, even Byfield spends the majority of the year playing in the AHL.

I think the biggest weakness of the team is centre until Byfield is ready, but it isn't worthwhile to overpay for a top-6 centre.
Norris, Batherson, Formenton and Abramov mean the youth movement is here for Tkachuk to lead while waiting on Byfield and Stutzle. I'm on the fence about Balcers being a regular but lets say he makes it.
Connor Brown gets a 50% raise on his last contract as does Tierney to sign in a non-contender/reward for good production on a #30 team. The term on Tierney is longer than one would like with who is in the pipeline, but Anisimov leaving (hopefully at the trade deadline for more picks this upcoming year) makes room for Byfield to come up next season.

Moving Grabner gives Arizona some cap space, he wants to move instead of being a healthy scratch, and the Sens get a stabilizing veteran up front.
This is another bottom-10 team, unless the defence plays a much better game this year but 2021-22 looks really good.

Oh I agree. But I feel inclined to play devils advocate for a moment.

1. Clearly you see Tierney as an odd man out down the line, so why not move him for a young piece at RD? Organizationally this is a weak spot for the Sens.

2. The team does not make basement. So can more than afford to take on another bad contract with 1 or 2 years left on it. Like Benning wouldn't be willing to move Ericsson to clear cap space and a Jet Woo to say thank you..... Jet Woo is a RD. See above.

This team is really deep up front. So yes, gotta wait. But I see this as a prime oppirtunity to shore up the organizational defensive depth while doing exactly what you are suggesting.

Even if the sens come out of the draft without lafreniere, Byfield and Stutzle would be great. THat Karlsson trade is looking really good rn

Both your points are good.
#1 To Tierney, yes he's the odd man out in my mind, but he's important this season to see a year where the wheels don't fall completely off the bus while players are developing. At trade deadline or next off-season, I agree completely.
#2 Agree 100%. It'll be interesting to see how Seattle expansion shapes contracts going forward but yeah I want to see them weaponize that cap space and take some bad contracts for assets before all these young guys come off their ELCs.

Maybe right with Tierney, but there there maybe enough support there to mentor the kids - Ryan, Brown (he has worked hard to earn his spot), maybe even Amisinov (yikes!).

Real concern really, is with Logan Brown not on this roster, and how upset he was going to Bellevegas, being sent down again after camp may not fly. His numbers in Belleville suggest he gets a legit shot as the Sens 3C.

So now a challenge..... do you move Brown for that RD if your keeping Tierney?
