The problem is the pieces Montreal has don't fit with Toronto's needs and vice versa. Asking for more is fine in general but more if it isn't what you need doesn't mean much and Marner is not Mitch Marner. it's Mitch Marner with an 11 mil tab. Once you sign a guy to a huge number (see Price, or Luongo with Van for example) You start to have to be realistic. This gets the player that will be going of their big contracts out, to a place he makes sense (which isn't Montreal, they don't need more small skill forwards). Doesn't cost them picks that they don't really have, gets out the excess other pieces they have and gets them back the RD's they need. A first to fix the Marleau trade and Silferberg whose a stud just kinda round it out. I think the only players Toronto should be looking at to start a deal for marner are top affordable defensive right D Men. Two of them are in this trade, the other is David Savard. CBJ is too close to Toronto these days and wont want to boost a contender while picking up the scraps of the deal. I still haven't seen an argument I like against this deal.
