Since trading Karlsson's the topic of the day, this scenario came up when a friend made a throw-away comment of "Just wait for the Karlsson/Mrazek trade"
Detroit Trade: The Wings give up a lot, but also get rid of Green's contract. It's a money-neutral move in terms of their cap problems, but goes a long way towards fixing their defense. Either Hickets or Ouellet work in the trade - the former is expansion draft-exempt, whereas the latter is closer to NHL-ready.
St Louis Trade: St Louis gets a two-way center that can still create offensively to free up Tarasenko and Schwartz to do their thing, while dumping cap at 3LW (Berglund to Smith retained), as well as an upgrade to 2LD.
Anaheim Trade: The Ducks get Bobby back, while addressing the question of how they're going to get both Lindholm and Rakell under contract. They get a good RD prospect with NHL experience to slot in behind Vatanen, as well as another LW prospect that can finish, while dumping Stoner's contract.
Expansion Draft: Larkin and Hickets are exempt from expansion, so protect Hoffman, Stone, Jaskin, Brassard, Silfverberg, Mantha, Pageau, Lindholm, Shattenkirk, Phaneuf, and Mrazek. I project Vegas to select Lazar in the expansion draft.
After 2016-17: Berglund's is allowed to walk, and Neil retires. Extensions to Shattenkirk, Pageau, and Dzingel. White potentially makes the team as 4C, with Paul on his wing.
After 2017-18: This is the off-season with big contracts due. Likely big raises to Stone, Larkin, and Mantha, and possible significant raises for Mrazek, Jaskin, and Wideman. A decision must be made on Green and Hammond; the former is likely allowed to walk, and the combination of his expiring contract plus Stoner's should give Ottawa plenty of room for their re-signings. Hammond is moved at the trade deadline if one of O'Connor or Driedger is ready.
You're dreaming if you think the Ducks want Ryan at 7.5m for 5 more years. The Ducks can give away Stoner (probably). Think St Louis would do that deal. Ottawa doesn't get all that much especially long term because Shattenkirk isn't resigning with Ottawa.

The Ducks bringing Ryan back is less outlandish than bringing in Nash, especially when you couple Ceci in the package. Ducks fans both here and elsewhere have made comments about bringing him back, and shoring up their forward depth has to be a concern on a team trying to keep their window open. Stoner has negative value, and it would involve moving other assets to get rid of him. They already have Bieksa as an overpaid 5/6/7; having both on the payroll, plus an effective but still expensive Despres is pushing it for a team with a budget.
As far as the St Louis trade goes, you have to give to get. $6.5M is probably market value for Shattenkirk, and with the young core that Ottawa would have in place after these trades (Stone, Hoffman, Larkin, Mantha, Silfverberg, Jaskin, Pageau, Lindholm, Wideman, Hickets, and Mrazek all 26 or younger, with a cap situation that will allow the team to retain them all in the long term, coupled with an improving prospect pool that these trades only make deeper) being 1RD on that team would be a pretty cushy spot. The trade's a risk, and maybe you get St Louis to include a conditional pick, but taking that risk can help convince the player to sign, too. You have an entire year of him being the man on a competitive, young team whose window is wide open and only getting wider to convince him to sign.
