I'm just playing with the idea. I know Grubauer is better, but he's also an UFA in 2021 so I'm exploring options of how we could get ahead of the game. That said we're probably best off keeping Grubauer until the ED and then either resigning him or letting him walk in free agency and finding another starter via trade/UFA in 2021.

Georgiev needs to be protected in the ED so this probably doesn't work that well for Colorado.

I agree. But what if he prices himself out by asking for $6.5m+?

Do you think San Jose can find a better and cheaper starter to help them quickly reverse their fortunes and become a playoff team again?

I like Greiss and Khudobin. Both will be cheaper. Greiss began his career here and can still put up strong numbers. Don’t get me wrong I like Grubauer but we need these picks worse.

I would tend to disagree. San Jose are clearly "all-in" and only have a couple more years of Karlsson/Burns/Vlasic/Couture being good enough to contend, so it doesn't really make sense for half-measures. Use the picks to pick up players who can help you win now while you can still compete.

That said, I agree that perhaps Grubauer isn't the player you should be spending those assets on. But you definitely need a goalie upgrade if you're going to go anywhere.

Sharks will easily pass. Not interested in paying that much for a goalie of that age even if he’s had a great year. I’d rather pay that almost nothing price for Georgie

Fair enough if you want to pass. But the price for Georgiev here isn't "almost nothing". Jost and Zadorov each have a value of about a 2nd + 3rd (so 2 2nds and 2 3rds total). With NYR sending back a 3rd they are effectively getting 2 2nd's and a 3rd for a goalie who's never played over 34 games. Compared to that 2 2nd's for a proven starter seems reasonable.

Fair enough but I dont really value Jost at that price or Zadorov. Jost to me looks like a bust, and I was one of his biggest fans. Zadorov is okay but thats it, hes a bottom pairing solid D who can play higher. I dont think teams are excited or interested in either really.

I've seen Sharks, Rangers, and LA fans proposing trades for Zadorov so that last part isn't really true.

Jost is still only 22 years old, which is the same age that a lot of current star players were just playing their first NHL seasons. He just needs a good opportunity and some time to find his game.

Maybe, I just dont see much upside in his style. Maybe he can be a good third line center for someone

Zadorov maybe but not Jost, Jost is clearly a bust as a 10th overall pick. I wouldn’t pay more than a 4th for Jost and that’s the absolute maximum. Despite what you’ve seen on capfriendly I’m not overly excited about Zad or Jost in any real way. Grubauer is a good goalie. You just need to understand how bare the cupboards are in SJ, we need those picks more than we need Grubauer. We can likely get a much more favorable deal with STL for Allen.

I agree that you can get a better deal trade-wise with St Louis for Allen, but keep in mind that his caphit is $1m higher than Grubauer which will make a big difference in your ability to ice a competitive roster (eg. resigning Labanc).

Jost is far from a bust. He's the 9th highest scoring 10th overall pick in the last 25 years (0.35ppg), and even a modest bump up to 0.5ppg would see him ranked 5th. He's been really good in stretches, like against San Jose in the playoffs, or after the deadline this year (7 points in 9 games) and is still only 22 so it's way too early to write him off. He's definitely at least a 3rd liner at this stage, with plenty of room to improve.

Sure he has potential but that clearly hasn’t translated yet. When his potential begins to translate to the nhl game I will happily adjust my opinion. Labanc will be a relatively cheap re-sign in the realm of 3.5-4mil, this was his prove it season and he had a stutter. If this Grubauer trade actually transpired, I would be far from upset, he’s a very good goaltender but it’s not my preference to move two very valuable picks.
