Duncan Keith Is The Most Overrated Defenceman Of The Cap Era

Created by: HattrickKane88

Description
Even as a Blackhawks fan, it is not hard to admit that Duncan Keith is one of the worst and most overrated defenceman in NHL history. There is nothing impressive about him whatsoever. The guy is a turnover machine & is incapable of moving the puck out of the defensive zone. Whenever he's on the ice, the Blackhawks are getting outplayed. The guy can't defend the front of the net & is always out of position. His reputation of winning multiple cups has been severely overblown. Literally anyone could've won with that team. They were so stacked on offence with Patrick Kane & Brandon Saad plus had a tremendous defence featuring Nick Leddy & Dustin Byfuglien. Also, Keith's Norris trophies were undeserved. Just because he played a lot of minutes & scored a lot of points, it doesn't mean he was good. Look at Morgan Rielly for example. Keith has never had a WAR higher than 0.3 throughout his career, so it's embarrassing how bad he is.

duncan keith is a class act. he was by far one of the best d in the league in his prime.he has lost a step so has alot of players his age.i had the pleasure of knowing him and his family.to see him come from the gangley legged peewee to one of the best d in the nhl was awesome.he deserves respect for his contributions to the nhl not trolled by a so called hawks fan.

Just because you watched him when he was a child does not make him elite. It's about what you do at the top level & Keith was nonsencial. He costed us so often with his lack of discipline and poor defensive ability. Take a look at the stats. When he's on the ice, team gets outplayed.

Well, I’ll take a more hands, less insulting approach in my response.

Respectfully, saying Keith is overrated is a little heavy handed. I’ll admit that some of statistics (assists especially) are helped along by the offensive studs this team had. As for his turnovers and passing, I would ask if you had numbers on the turnovers. Not questioning you, just would love to see numbers. His passing, in my opinion hasn’t always been as bad as you say. He use to be an amazing stretch passer in his prime. The 2015 playoffs was him putting on a show as well.

So while I don’t necessarily agree with your assessment, I won’t shoot it down at all. This team was stacked for years. But I also believe Keith was a big part of that with his leadership and his insane work rate (28-30 minutes a night ain’t easy). But I’m curious as to anything else you could add that missing.

Keith averages 93 turnovers a season, which is not bad compared to other offensive defenceman, but still not good considering he was mostly used in the offensive zone & always shared the ice with Kane who's one of the best possession drivers in the history of the game. Too often his reputation has been overblown by the fact that he played a ton of minutes on cup teams. Given the talent on the roster throughout the lineup, anyone could've done what he's done. The team always gets outshot when Keith is on the ice. Always.

If you think Keith was a good defenceman, then you don't know what you're watching. Whenever he's on the ice the team gets stuck in their own end. That was especially the case during the 2015 cup run which makes his Conn Smythe even more of a joke. Kane was the best player by far in all 3 cup runs. Just because you score a lot of points and play a ton of minutes it doesn't make you elite. You actually have to get results & Keith isn't capable of doing so.

Still not overrated. Top 3 defenseman from the last decade.

Not even close. Top 3 defenders of the last decade are Carlson, Suter & Hughes.
