Description
Exerpt from The Athletic article published today, relating to the 2017 offseason:

"Shattenkirk and Neumann decided they’d give Colorado GM Joe Sakic a ring, as well. Sakic seemed surprised to hear from the former Avalanche player but there was genuine interest on both sides.

“He’d loved his time in Colorado,” Neumann said. “When they got involved (Shattenkirk) took it very, very seriously.”

He spent a lot of time on the morning of July 1 pacing at his summer home, wondering and pouring over his pro and con sheets, and talking with Neumann."

Also consider this tweet from the 2019 offseason:

David Pagnotta
@TheFourthPeriod
Shattenkirk had serious interest from several teams, including Toronto, Colorado and Winnipeg. He made decision and chose Tampa last night.

After signing a 1 year $1.75m contract last summer Shattenkirk might want to get some more term this time around. However, the flat cap might make that a challenge so he may have to settle for a 1 year deal. That may be fine for him though given that he's still getting paid from the NYR buyout, and he may also prefer a 1 year deal wherever he signs in order to ensure that he doesn't end up in Seattle.

At the very least Jost is a serviceable 3rd liner who plays really solid defense. He also has offensive potential which he could yet unlock playing in the right system.

As a comparison Colorado traded a 2nd + 3rd for Burakovsky who was coming off back-to-back 25 point seasons. Burakovsky had shown flashes of more offense but was stuck on Washington's 3rd line. That's very similar to Jost, who's last two seasons are 26 points and (pacing) 28 points this year. Jost also plays the more important position (C), and is also much better defensively than Burakovksy. With that comparable I don't think a 2nd + 3rd is an unreasonable ask.

Zadorov will get lost in the ED, so it's best to get value for him while we can. I also don't think it's wise to get locked into a $3.5m+ longterm contract with him on the 3rd pairing.

The "only" player? So you'd have no interest in Burakovsky, Mackinnon, Landeskog, etc? sarcasm

I guess you mean the only realistically available player though.

Just out of curiosity, what would you be willing to pay for Compher?

We are going to lose someone in the expansion draft for nothing, a 2nd and 3rd means nothing really to this team, they prospect pool is stocked and they are notorious at making bad 2nd round picks.. I'd rather him crush the competition all next year and take the chance of losing him than just to trade him for basically nothing

2nd + 3rd got us Burakovsky who's pacing for 28 goals and 64 points.

The season before a 2nd got us Grubauer and a 3rd got us Brassard as a rental.

3 years ago a 2nd got us Timmins.

Point being those picks aren't nothing and can actually help the team.
