I do like Foote a fair bit as a prospect but yup NJ probably accepts that. Very similar to the Ehlers trade I just posted

Lol, if our GM has any idea what he's doing yes we do. I would love to hear your reasoning against trading Severson and 10th overall for a fast, young LW who's close to being a point per game player.

Maybe we start with the reason why you left Foote out of your explanation?

I'd say yes if Ehlers was the last piece to build a contender but we're to far away to trade our best defender togehter with our 2nd best prospect and probably the 2nd best pick we own for one player.

Because in a deal like this he isn't a major piece, thought that was pretty obvious. Just because he's our 2nd best prospect doesn't mean that he's an elite, upper echelon prospect relative to the rest of the NHL. The Devils prospect pool is severely lacking high end talent, everybody knows this. He's a nice prospect but a point per game scoring rate in the WHL as a 19 year old isn't overly impressive, and I shouldn't have to tell you this. Any Devils fan who thinks he's going to be a top line winger is setting themselves up for big time disappointment. He won't be half the player Ehlers is.

As for your point about not being ready to contend, you know the best way to work towards becoming a contender? Acquiring good players. At 24 years of age he easily fits our window, and if Hughes takes a big step next year our top 6 would be looking pretty damn good.

If we go back to January when we traded Coleman to Tampa the Devils reportedly had multiple offers with several prospects to choose from. They toke Foote. So while he might not be a major piece for you, he certainly is one to our decision makers.

The Devils certainly lack high end talent in their farm but guess what doesn't help to solve that? Trading away one of the 2 we currently have. I'm definitely not saying first line winger (you are the first person I see suggesting something like that so I don't know where thats coming from) is his potential but it's still high enough to prevent us from making that deal.

Aquiring good players definitely gets you closer to contention but the deal here actually takes us further away from it.

I like Ehlers and I would love to have him in New Jersey but not for that deal.

The farm matters much less when you have high end players in the big club.

Agree to heavily disagree, how you think acquiring an almost point per game LW at 24 years old on a very cheap deal in exchange for a top 4 D that's a defensive liability (and whose production will be somewhat replaced by Smith next season), a prospect that's maybe in the top 50 league wide and projects as a decent middle 6 winger at best, and 10th overall which could be nothing meanwhile we still have 7 and the AZ pick sets us back more than helps us is beyond me. You are either severely overrating everybody in the NJD organization or severely underrating Ehlers.

I'm guessing any deal you would propose for him would be garbage value going back to WPG.

Disagree, heaviliy. With the cap being introduced (and especially now when it'll be more or less a flat cap for several seasons) it's gotten more and more important to have cheap talent available at any point. I'm not saying a clearcut contender must have a top 5 farm in the league but I guess you probably know where I'm going.

First of all, if we've learnd something this season it should be that nothing is for granted during a rebuild. So you arguing with Smith's production next season is already very questionable (I'm not hoping for him to be bad, in fact I'd love to see him crushing the NHL as soon as next year). Secondly, it's not like the Devils have a surplus in backend production and are in a position to expose some of that. They need more of that for several years now and they still need more regardless of Smith's impact next season.

NHL teams nowadays don't make trades for the sake of making a trade, you probably know that. Not only has the value to be there (here it definitely is for WPG, not for us) it has to make sense as well.

I think you have to take context more into consideration. Foote definitely has the talent and the potential to be a 2nd line player for us. Especially since we already have strong playmaking centers in the making and he can rely on his shot and doesn't have to be the guy carring the play (I'm not saying he couldn't if he had to).

10OA can be nothing but it can also get you a player even better than Ehlers, we don't know yet. But I find it very funny how you lay out your arguments.
