the reset might end this year but the results will suffer for it. i'd disagree about the habs prospect pool. their top-10 maybe even top 5 but they lack a real super star or game breaker. teams like ottawa or la may be behind the habs now but they have the elite talent developing in the system.
i'd suggest picking a direction and going with it. if it's to get younger than sell tatar, gallagher, and petry. should be able to get 1st+ for every one of them. i'd just focus on youth until suzuki, kk and romanov were capable of leading the team into the playoffs.
next year might be too late since gallagher, tatar, and petry need new contracts by then. the only really asset to sell next season is chiarot, which is underwhelming,
Not sure you can say OTT and LA have the without-a-doubt-elite prospects right now (good chances they will after this draft).
The way I see it, Gallagher, Danault, and Petry are locks to be resigned/extended this year (Tatar is questionable, but he's had such a nice fit in MTL -- I can see him being resigned to stay on that line)
Domi seems like the likely trade this upcoming offseason
For 2021-2022, they'll have Lehkonen (RFA) and Armia (UFA) as potential smaller trade chips depending on the team's situation.
I also believe they'll have to part with some of the prospects -- I'd prefer it sooner than later -- I can see Poehling being shopped; or one of the many D prospects, Norlinder, Strubble, Harris; and Brook, Fleury, and Juulsen in the slightly older age group.
They already ran out of contract space this season, and are having to let players walk away from their signing rights. They'll probably be looking for European players this draft because of it. So, I think they are fine with trading prospects after this upcoming draft.
