While Edmonton could absolutely use their own home-grown #3C with top-six potential, how do the Oilers justify passing up on either Amirov or Askarov, which both represent much more dire organizational needs, and can still be considered BPA at #14?

I hear you. I'd seriously consider Askarov. But, goalies take about 5 years to arrive. Even the elite ones. I'm not sure we can wait for Askarov to arrive. Cross your fingers that Konovalov is the real deal? Unload a bunch of contracts (trades, buyouts, letting RFAs, UFAs go) and sign a marquee goalie like Lehner or Markstrom?

Also, Centers can often play wing (Draisaitl, Nugent-Hopkins for example) but it doesn't often work the other way and Amirov isn't rated any higher than Zary by many scouts, in fact I think most have Zary ahead of Amirov. Zary represents a big, speedy, goal-scoring forward who can play C or W. Plus I'll take the kid from Saskatchewan every time, haha.

I put a lot of stock in the fact that Amirov plays against men in the second best league on the planet and performs phenomenally against his peers. I also tend to shy away from WHL players: I don't have much to base it on other than more NHL players come from the OHL. Not a fan of the system most WHL teams abide by.

I think it's worth recognizing that Askarov probably isn't 5 years out. He's playing well above his age bracket, and he's only obligated to stay in Russia for 2 more seasons. I think he's 3 years out tops, which is about what we'd expect from a quality forward taken at #14.
