If there are better options defensively why would he play in those situations? "He doesn't kill penalties so he sucks defensively" I don't have any desire to argue with you. Nylander is a terrific player with a lot more to give and he will continue to grow. I am at least not dumb enough to want to move him in a losers deal to acquire an ok defenceman.
