Close but no cigar

Created by: Smithmann
Team: 2020-21 Boston Bruins
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 8, 2020
Published: Sep. 8, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Doesn't quite make the cap but it's close - I reduced the cap to cover Bos' $1.9m bonus overage (didn't know how else to do it). We still have Backes' $1.5m on the books too.
Gets rid of the bottom-end deadweight (they're free, take 'em) and plays the kids.
Gonna need to pay more for Hall too (at least).
It's also a 23/40-man roster.

Simple. Don’t resign Chara. Overpaid for Dillon.

But then there is the matter of Debrusk and Grizz who you did not resign. Plus getting rid of Wagner, Kuraly, Kase is not a good idea.

Yeah we can obviously get something for Kase (and others), I just didn't want to deal with it. My idea is to clear the useless, offensively challenged, bottom-six and replace them with kids (not that Kase is useless, but he had 0 goals in the playoffs from #2 RW).

As for Chara/Dillon: If Chara wants to come back, for cheap, and for 3rd-pairing minutes then fine. Doesn't matter anyway for $1m as the kids are still going to cost $925k regardless..
And if Dillon is cheaper than $5m then more for Hall! I know he isn't a #1 but Mac is. And Dillon as our #1 LD sounds a lot better than either Chara or Gryz there.

Edit: Oh yeah, Debrusk. Casualty of Hall! But if not Hall, then DeBrusk and Toffoli. Have to do something.

What exactly did Wagner, Kuraly and Kase bring us to help us advance to the SCF this year? Nothing that's what. Load up on the top-end with Hall and Toffoli and play kids. Nothing wrong with Bjork/Coyle/Studnicka anyway. Hell, nothing wrong with me/Coyle/you!

Well, if you think Kase didn't bought anything, you haven't watched anything. Kuraly was injured and the 4th line was out of sync but their line is effective when they're on their game. Wagner fine and Ritchie/Moore for sure. Toffoli isn't signing a one-year deal. Dillon is overpaid. Where are Grzelcyk and DeBrusk??

I think we resign Gryz and Debrusk. But you are right that the 2nd line needs a complete overhaul. Krejci needs some help. Like to see a Debrusk,Coyle,Kase/Bjork 3rd line. That would be a great 3rd line. Get Krejci 2 scoring wingers as you have done here.

Marchand - Bergeron - Pasta
Hall - Krejci - Toffoli
Debrusk - Coyle - Kase
Lindholm - Kuraly - Wagner

Gryz - Mac
Lauzon - Carlo
Chara - Clifton

We are all well aware that the B’s middle 6 wings outside of Debrusk contributed nothing all year and need an upgrade. Plenty of ways to accomplish that. This is not it. This is a mess. If i have to explain the importance of the roles Kuraly and Wagner play to you than this is pointless.

There are only 4 impact wings available via free agency and 20+ teams will be vying for them. The odds of one team landing 2 of them are slim.

Studnicka and Kase (if healthy, big if) in the lineup all year would already be a significant improvement offensively over what they got from all they tried at middle 6 wing other than Debrusk. Bjork needs to step up production or be sat.

They definitely need to add one if not 2 of those impact wings and then move some of the extra pieces for a LD. Or add 1 wing and and a LD via FA.

Hall is the primary target. But many teams will be in on him, teams in better shape cap wise. I can see the bidding get up over 8m per. If that happens i doubt it’s Boston. Toffoli would be a great add, wanted him at deadline. But Nucks want him back and it sounds like he wants to stay there.

Hoffman seems like the most realistic option and then adding a mid level cost d man like Edmundson or Dillon.

They could add one of the big name forwards via FA. Trade Debrusk for d man and add another of the top wings via FA, or Kase/Ritche for a d man and add another middle 6 wing option like Haula.

They need to find a taker for Moore which won’t be easy.

The one thing they can’t do....is nothing. But they know that.

I’m pretty sure we’d all love to see Hall and Toffoli/Hoffman/Dadonov signed. Debrusk/Kase/Zboril trade for Hanifin or Nurse/Pujuljarvi. Moore/Ritche/Bjork moved for picks to free cap space. We also know it’s highly unlikely to happen.

No need to sign Cehlárik he isn’t coming back this season. Wagner, Kase and Kuraly wouldn’t be for free. Dillon won’t cost that much.

The point is this: Sure, Kase "looked good" against Carolina but didn't score. Was useless against Tampa.
Toffoli's just on a one-year deal just because I clicked sign and wasn't worried about term. We can sign him for 5 years. You know how much money's coming off the cap next year?
Cehlárik's there to make a 40-man roster.

I like our 4th line fine, but they're a 4th line. Need to sacrifice to upgrade. If everybody had their way it'll be the exact same roster coming back next year minus Ritchie. That's not good enough. Plus it'll be Gryz and Moore and Chara on the left-side. Good luck with that.

And I wasn't worried about signing Debrusk and Gryz and trading them (or anyone else), I was just trying to make it fit within the cap. It's close but no cigar. But people can be traded for picks for the eventual rebuild.
