Convincing under the radar UFAs to sign for cheap

Team: 2020-21 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 16, 2020

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
With many teams having cap/salary issues there may be some ufa’s that get overlooked. AA and Galchenyuk may just be in that category, especially since they both had pretty bad years. At Sheahan’s production while getting extended minutes, he’ll likely not fetch more than slightly above a league minimum contract, I would like to keep him around though, because he has good chemistry with Archibald and was good on the PK. He gives Edmonton extra options at center too. Benning and Ennis take a bit less money to stay in Edmonton with term to ride out the 3 years of flat cap.

Let me know how ‘reasonable’ this is. I could be out to lunch especially with the Galchenyuk signing. Though I do really like 3 former 30 goal scorers on the 3rd line.

LAK
  1. Russell, Kris
  2. 2021 4th round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Russell is only owed $1.5M in salary and is still a useful Defenceman with a value around $2.5M. He can play either side at around 16 minutes a night and can still play top 4 in a pinch (better than a guy like Benning).
2.
EDM
  1. 2020 6th round pick (MTL)
MTL
  1. Chiasson, Alex
Additional Details:
Some MTL fans like Chiasson, others don’t so I don’t really know what to think. If this doesn’t work the trade could be with anyone, it might also be necessary to pay someone to take him.

Signings seem fairly reasonable to me.
For all the reasons you explained is why russell doesn’t actually have the negative value many suggest or think around here but he’s not going to fetch a return worth arguing over.

I feel like of AA goes to UFA he will get more money from another team and probably won't want to resign in Edmonton if they don't want to qualify him. He would probably rather go to UFA so he has more of a choice to where he can play. Same with Galchenyuk. Sheahan wants more money, I think that why he hasn't resigned. Could probably sign bear for much less considering he has no arbitration rights. Holland also wants to stay 1-1.5 mil under the cap limit. Although I think it would be sweet if Holland pulled off all these moves plus maybe a surprising trade or two to shake things up I think the team we had last year was more then good enough still. Still have some D developing and some solid forward prospects that could steal a roster spot or two soon(Benson, lavio, maksimov). It would be a safe bet if Holland kept it simple and let some money come off the books for free next year would be fine. Last year the Oilers were a playoff team before the break. I wouldn't be upset if he kept the team as close to that as possible.

Yeah I know Holland likes more space but I tried and tried but just couldn’t get it while checking all the boxes. Yeah I doubt AA signs for less at this point but there’s still a chance. Though as you pointed out the extra 500k to qualify him could possibly come from Bear. Good idea.

Well said and agree completely. Right now less is more the team was fun to watch threw the season. Pieces coming up that are worth some excitement. As long as don’t do anything dramatic flat cap won’t be difficult to work around.

I'd think Russell and Chaisson could fetch a little more regardless of their prices.

That third line would get caved in defensively to record levels. The +/- stat would be brought back up EVERY game!
