2022-2023 Roster - Frozen Cap Era - Prospects Dev and 2 note-worthy trades

Description
Considering Price's and Weber's contracts and the lack of a "critical mass" of NHL-ready prospects on ELC in the Habs's pool before at least 2021-2022 / 2022-2023, I built this scenario to explore the mid-term impact of keeping Danault, Gallagher and Petry at a reasonable cost (5,75-6,25M/year range) and signing Kotkaniemi, Suzuki and Romanov to bridge deals. I think it's likely, especially since I expect a trend towards contracts lasting 3-4 years maximum for the near future.

In any case, would remain around 11M for two wingers : to keep - or replace - Tatar and Domi.

In this scenario, I use this cap space to trade for Huberdeau and Killorn, since they would each in their own way better complement the existing core.

I think the Killorn trade makes sense for both team in the 2020 offseason considering Tampa's cap situation and Montreal's need on the wings.

As for the Huberdeau deal, it's a starting offer. I'd be at least willing to upgrade Struble for Harris and the 2020 4th for a 2nd.

As for Tatar, I didn't bother working out a deal, but he would need to be traded for futures (or somehow included in the Huberdeau deal) for the other trades to work out salary-wise.

Same goes for Byron in the 2021 offseason and potentially Chiarot in his last year of contract in 2022, if Norlinder is ready to take over.

It's funny how you add a 4th, probably means you know the main pieces weren't enough yet you aren't willing to add anything more valuable to the offer (which would be much needed in this case).

I see too often people throwing Suzuki and KK name and saying one of them as too be in the return for that guy or that guy and its often really out of line IMO. In that case tho, it's definitly something that would have to happen. What you are giving here is 4 question marks. Domi is good but so inconsistent, you never know what you will get one game from the other, he can win you games as much as he can cost you games. Struble and Poehling are good prospects but not bluechip propsects, they could do as great in the NHL as they could flop and both don't really have star potential. The pick is also very good but outside of the top 10, chances are you won't get anything close to what Huberdeau brings to a team. On the other hand, Huberdeau comes with absolutely no question marks. He's a PPG player, consistent, great contract and still very young.

Soooo, any attempt to get him without having surely 1 and probably 2 of either Caufield KK Romanov or Suzuki is just useless.

I targeted Huberdeau in this scenario because the Panthers are at a crossroad offensively and might want to explore a new direction. If Montreal hadn’t move for Edmunston, it would have had the cap space to take on a « bad contract » to facilitate deal. Without this leverage, I concur that the Habs must overpay for Huberdeau, who would help solve Montreal’s PP woes and lack of high-end talent, while his contract terms would nevertheless give the Habs cap flexibility to build 3 offensive lines (and be a good way to put pressure on Gallagher and Danault’s agents for them to sign under 6M/year upon renewal!)

If Domi extended at least 3 years (@ max. 5M), Tatar with 50% retention for 1 year (60 pts winger @ 2,4M), MTL’s 2021 1st round pick (top-10 protected), Ryan Poehling and a young D not named Romanov or Norlinder (LD : Mete/Harris/Struble or RD : Fleury/Juulsen/Brooks) does not enough to spark interest from Florida - who can dump a few contracts to make it work if need be - then I would Move on to another target!

(I previously tried Comtois from Anaheim, Greenway (+2021 1st) from Minnesota and, I must admit, Mantha from Detroit (although nothing outrageous like some proposals out there!)

I guess Josh Anderson, either by trade or RFA offer (below 4M), will be my target in a next attempt!
