overpay for Brady
Im a die hard habs fan and you couldn't be as far as an overpay right here.
- Josh Anderson has negative value.
- Since drafted Filip Mesar did not show any real progress worth trading for. IMO he lost initial value (I would not trade a 1st round pick between 25 and 32 for him). He's a fine project but best case scenario he's worth a late 1st round pick/ early 2nd or another "project".
- 5th overall is a really great asset but the chances Ottawa can pick up a player just as good as Brady or even slighty worse are very very slim.
- I dont have much to say about Mailloux because I really do think he will be a good NHL Dman.
Even when you add it all up, what do Ottawa really get out of this for trading one of the rarest pure powerfoward in the NHL?
If we want him without giving any core pieces, it has to be a huuuuuuuge overpay. Something like :
5th overall 2024
MTL 2025 pick (easily top 15)
Kaiden Guhle
Even this I can see Ottawa hang up.
You cant accept giving up that much, I get it, its a steep price but you wont get a 25 years old top 10 LW without bleeding a lot.

Pearson wont be benched from the start but I dont mind Pezzetta over him. Harris should also start instead of Lindstrom, both had underwelming performances in camp but Harris should have the edge being younger and a product of the organization

Monahan could finish with 10pts in 82games and that would still be a weak offer. The leadership he can bring and the defensive burden he can take from our 2 young centers makes him that much valuable. That is without saying we already have so much late picks in the next 2 drafts.
At the deadline, it's an offer worth considering if he underperforms or isnt full healthy. If he can stay healthy, I predict at least a 0.60ppg while being a very usefull 200ft player and you wont get him for that, especially under 2M.

Jets if buying at TDL
We drafted 20 players in the last 2 draft and we have 21 picks in the next 2 drafts. What you offer nonthless the asking is mostly irrelevant, espicially for weakening the RD depth chart, wich is our worst position.
Yes Barron or Kovacevich value isnt high, but that's exactly why developing them into full time NHLer is much smarter than getting low picks right now. Our deep prospects pool should only be used for acquiring top players when ready to compete again.

Yeah signing a 7x14M contract exactly when a player enters his 30's always end up aging well..
Drasaitl is top 5 league wide and will be probably for another 4-5 years. From 32 to 37, this contract might be very very bad tho, espicially since his speed is already not that great.

Formation 2023 2024

Are you really offering a frange NHL player and a 2nd round pick to take over 20M over 4 years in cap space?
How about we ship you Gallagher with COL 2nd and Pezzetta for Foegele?

He is tho! Still skating and shooting like that at 35 is impressive. He may not be the player he was 3 years ago and may block some of your young guys but he's still a good Dman and a gentleman.
If you watch 82 games, you will see a couple of head scratching plays but also a lot of good ones. He's more fun to watch than Holl or Ghost at least.

That is something I chose not to consider hehe. MTL might defintly be on his list. I do think that promises to play on the top6 on a team that is trying to be relevant as soon as possible and full of young promising talent is somehow enticing a little...

True. The timing to pay for top6 players is a little off this year but for 2024-25 and 25-26 seasons, while Marchment is 28-30 years old, I think we can start to be relevant and push for a playoff spot. Even if we don't, its not like I gave up the entire farm, we have 5 2nrd round picks in the next 3 drafts.

I based my proposal on a rumour I saw. I also think that Marchment is more valuable than Petry and a 2nd but Dallas does need some help at RD. Petry at 2.4M is a good deal that fills an immediate need and Dallas have guys in the farm like Stankoven, Bourque and Stranges capable of filling the gap in a very near future. It also gives them 7.2M in cap space over the next 3 years as mentionned.

He did just had a good season without live up to the one he had in Florida. I also watched the stars in playoffs and he was so usefull even if the production was meeeh. I get that he's not a sure thing but he's far from Gallagher and Armia production vs contract wise. I feel he could thrive being the complement of Zuke and Caufield, he have what the other two miss in their game, kind of like Anderson but with more IQ.

I get why you analyze it that way. IMO, he's a .5PPG defensivly well rounded player with size. 4.5M is a little high I can give it to you but not by a large margin, especially if the cap continue to go up.
I added from MTL side because I dont think Jim Neil would consider a 1v1 swap even with retention.
I know you reading a lot of comments from this blog, you're never delusional and sometimes even severe so my proposal + your insight makes me think Im at least on too something that could happen haha!

I think absorbing Soupy's contract to get some very valuable pieces like Holloway, Bourgault or a 1st round pick is an idea to be considered but it won't happen if we send back capdumps ourselves like Armia or Allen. With this proposition, savings from EDM side does not justify giving up on this.

Its not gonna happen but I would like
Caufield Suzuki RHP
Slafkovsky Dach Anderson
Newhook Monahan Gallagher
Evans Dvorak Ylonen or Armia
Matheson Savard
Guhle Petry
Xhekaj Harris
As for Dach, faceoffs are an issue but he wont learn it on the wing and everything else a center have to do, he did it well without suzuki at the end of the year. We need him to develop as a good C if we want to be relevant soon and if we draft a high caliber one next year, than he could be moved to the wing once that guy is NHL ready. Thats my 2 cents but your opinion is as good as mine!

Caufield plays offwing.
Gallagher cannot handle top 6 duty anymore, both for icetime and production.
That 3rd line would never work, the three of them need playmakers.
Dont think Matheson playing top pair minutes on his unatural side is a good idea.
Savard won't be scratched.
Petry is gone before october.
Edit: and I do think that the plan is really to develop Dach as a solid 2C. He did very well at the end of last season before the injury.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CoachCoach</b></div><div>As the team is currently constructed, the Wings are projected anywhere from 7th up to 5th in the Atlantic. Adding Petry doesn’t change that. They could have a NJD come from nowhere season, but I wouldn’t call it likely or probable.
Prior to Holl and Ghost signings there was a possibility, but now there is no room. This season will most likely be the last before some of the kids are regulars, and Ghost is the Wing mercenary that hopefully does well on the PP and gets dealt at the deadline.
Johansson and Wallinder both could get some time as they do play the right side (WW frequently) after the deadline, and going in to next year Petry would just block the youth movement.</div></div>
That's good insight. I stand by my opinion that Petry at 2.3ishM AAV could fetch a 2nd tho. Maybe not with the wings but somewhere else with a good 20 something games into the season.

Maybe Petry is not a target but you are a better team with him on the top 4 than with Holl or Ghost. Anyway my comment was more to point out that this kind of return is not that crazy.

Pittsburgh retained 25%. So we have him a 4.7M right now. We can retain 50% of that, so the team who gets him will pay him 2.3ish a year. Its cheaper than Holl of Ghost AAV. Where is my math wrong?

Why the sass? You get him at 2.3M for 2 years. He plays 20+ minutes a night and he can help on the PP if needed. Justin Holl and Ghost are projecting to be in your top 6 on the right, Petry is a better player than both even at 35 and he cost less that both too with the retention.

Cup run
As a habs fan, we could not refused this trade because of the unfullfield Laff potential. As of right now it is a big underpayment to get a 22 years old 1st overall pick.
That being said, and I will sound delusional for most people but, I do think that the chances are not that slim that RHP will have a better career than Laffy and we lose this trade 5 years from now.
Anyway, that trade would never happen because anybody would do it without blinking an eye and is very unfair right now for NYR valuewise. If this was the cost to get Laff l, he would be gone already ny now and since a long time ago...
