That Draisaitl trade is almost insulting to Edmonton. Haula and Palat who are both pushing 33? NJ would have to send over someone of L-Hughes caliber to get him.

If we are gonna humor something with McDavid being traded, there's basically a 100% chance than Fantilli is part of the trade. Edmonton just ignores Columbus and talks to another team instead if he isn't. And likely other non Jiricek prospects as well. It'd probably have to be like.....Fantilli, KJ, '24 1st, and then a few other pieces of varying value (in a world where we're even gonna say a trade is possible)

Draisaitl is the second best player in the league and is on an EXTREMELY cheap contract compared to his value for the next two years. No that stuff isn't enough especially when you have the possibility of re-signing him.

With what cap space? This trade puts the Devils over the cap as-is, there's no way they can afford to give him the eight figures he'll want. Not to mention he'll be 29 when that new contract starts, his best years are already behind him

You move money around if you are talking about someone like Draisaitl. You make it work. He is literally better and more valuable than everyone else on the Devils' roster currently, and you have a very good team so that says a lot. Also, the cap is going up like 7 million next year alone.

Also the idea that NHL players are over the hill after their mid 20s needs to stop. Generally I wouldn't lock a 29 year old up to an 8 year deal but even that isn't beyond the realm of possibility when you're talking about players of this caliber. Crosby is 36 and still projected to put up over 100 points this year. You think Draisaitl won't be doing the same? Even if you're worried about decline, shorter terms are going to become more common. Look at what Matthews just did. Lock up Draisaitl for 4/5 years and call it a day then. Are you planning to dump Jack Hughes once he hits 29 since his "best years are behind him"?
