Why the sass? You get him at 2.3M for 2 years. He plays 20+ minutes a night and he can help on the PP if needed. Justin Holl and Ghost are projecting to be in your top 6 on the right, Petry is a better player than both even at 35 and he cost less that both too with the retention.

Not sure who is doing your math but I'd fire him.

Pittsburgh retained 25%. So we have him a 4.7M right now. We can retain 50% of that, so the team who gets him will pay him 2.3ish a year. Its cheaper than Holl of Ghost AAV. Where is my math wrong?

Well the trade above has Montreal retaining $2.3M of his $6.25M and that doesn't equal $2.3M.

Win more games? You probably know better than me as a wings fan but I assume the Debrincat trade and all of those UFA signings means hes planning on starting to be relevant no?

Maybe Petry is not a target but you are a better team with him on the top 4 than with Holl or Ghost. Anyway my comment was more to point out that this kind of return is not that crazy.

Than its on me, I assumed it was 2.3M retention from Montreal. Its true that we wont get close to a 2nd for Petry at 4.7M.

As the team is currently constructed, the Wings are projected anywhere from 7th up to 5th in the Atlantic. Adding Petry doesn’t change that. They could have a NJD come from nowhere season, but I wouldn’t call it likely or probable.

Prior to Holl and Ghost signings there was a possibility, but now there is no room. This season will most likely be the last before some of the kids are regulars, and Ghost is the Wing mercenary that hopefully does well on the PP and gets dealt at the deadline.

Johansson and Wallinder both could get some time as they do play the right side (WW frequently) after the deadline, and going in to next year Petry would just block the youth movement.

Makes this proposed trade seem rational.

That's good insight. I stand by my opinion that Petry at 2.3ishM AAV could fetch a 2nd tho. Maybe not with the wings but somewhere else with a good 20 something games into the season.

He’s not a bad player, he just doesn’t command what he used to. To certain teams, his value (especially at that retention) could be higher than now. For Detroit, it just isn’t a fit lol.

Well, that did not aged well...
We were both wrong at some point tho, as the return is much thiner than I would have imagined.

I guess so, lol my dad just sent it to my while I’m working…saw Detroit and Petry and just murmured “f***”

I wrote him back saying not a fan and he goes “loved his dad as a Tiger, I would have to imagine his kid is an athlete.”

He is tho! Still skating and shooting like that at 35 is impressive. He may not be the player he was 3 years ago and may block some of your young guys but he's still a good Dman and a gentleman.

If you watch 82 games, you will see a couple of head scratching plays but also a lot of good ones. He's more fun to watch than Holl or Ghost at least.

If this move was made without the Holl signing, I’d be happier lol. Ghost I’m fine with because Detroit needs to improve on the PP and he can do that, plus get at least something back at the deadline.
