Marner doesnt work

Description
I have seen several times today deals with the Canes acquiring Marner for Pesce and a pick. This is a response to how it really hurts the canes cap situation. The damage is really seen with the extreme lack of depth behind Dougie on the right side. Fleury is fine but he is a Left shot who has been able to play on the right, it is by no means ideal. The only way this works is if every single one of the canes young guys is able to be ready and produce. The next big issue comes when the canes have to resign Necas, Trocheck, and Kuemper and have no cap to do so

Pesce is a great player but I don’t think Dubas has any interest in trading Marner unless he’s getting a star player back, regardless of what his cap hit is. Just has too much upside. Both teams are best to just hold onto their guys.

Yeah I agree 100%. This deal isn’t my idea, I saw several other threads with it or something very similar. Marner is a great player but I agree that it doesn’t make sense either way

Could just me (regardless of whatever my thoughts are on the trade), but I think Pesce is a “star” in a different way. A defensive star, similar to players like Brodin; a player whose under appreciated due to lack of points. Maybe a better example would be old Vlasic. Vlasic from the past would make team Canada consistently over other high stock names and people would think Vlasic didn’t belong. But Vlasic, like Brodin and Pesce bring so much more to the table then the first glance. Pesce is behind Slavin who’s establishing his name amounts the best and Hamilton who had a solid year.

To be clear I agree Toronto would wait for someone to overpay, but if it was Pesce + 1st + good prospect coming back I’d do it in a heartbeat
