I've been hearing this crap trade from a few Leafs fans. I have to wonder if they know anything about hockey. Rielly only seems good since the rest of the defense is a wreck....

They look at his offensive numbers? 20 goals for 72 points in 2018-19. I've watched him play a lot. He's not a top pair defenseman.

Rielly is a phenomenal offensive defenseman. definitely top 10 if not top 5. His defense, not a fan. He's not a top pair defenseman in his own end.

That is what everyone says and it's complete bull****. A) much of it comes from this season where he was injured B) he played in a system (under Babs) that was a crap system that didn't work C) he's literally never had a decent partner and he's had to carry 3rd pair guys against top competition and still has been a top defenceman. Rielly is a top defenceman and better than anyone the Rangers have. End of the story, he's an elite player and is 26 still in his prime. Give him a partner who isn't crap and he's a Norris contender, imagine if Josi had to carry around Ceci, do you think he wins the Norris this year? Nope he gets to play with Ellis. Doughty played with Muzzin, Hedman gets great partners. Etc. Well 3 of those defenceman listed are RHD and do they need a good partner to be effective? No, neither does Rielly, he's been a top defenceman with Hainsey, Zaitsev and Ceci as his partner. The point is though, those guys all play with much better players than Rielly, they also play in systems that boost defensive numbers while Rielly played for Babs who's system was terrible defensively. Rielly sucking is a myth, and he wouldn't be your best LHD, he would be your best defenceman, period and it wouldn't be close.

Rielly 100% is a top pair defence man. Andyone who makes team Canada is pretty freaking good. Rielly has always had terrible partners in D (Ceci, Hainsey, Zaitsev.)

Anyone who says that Rielly isn’t a top pair defenceman has never watched Toronto play hockey. He and Muzzin are the only half decent defencemen on the leafs.

I've watched him play for years. He's incredible offensively. Good skater. Smart. Works hard. Blue collar. He's just not a top pair guy defensively speaking.

You can’t pick apart a defenceman on one area he isn’t great at. You have to look at the whole picture.

There are VERY few defencemen that are fantastic in every aspect of their game. Rielly is alright defensively, his +/- shows that to be true.

A defenseman that is not good offensively can still be a great defenseman. A defenseman that isn't good on defense is NOT a good defenseman. Seem to be missing that point. His +/- stat ISNT good since he plays the PP and is on the first line pairing. Meaning he will normally be on the ice when goals are scored therefore his + should be inflated. Since he is a -40 for his career says a lot.
