You're trying to save cap, better to not retain any money (cap) and add a better pick or prospect. Sutter is making $3.5MM in salary, a little high for his use, but it's only 1 year.

Edit: Ottawa could use a right shot winger, but not desperately.

why would the canucks sign EP and Qh to 5 year deals that walk them straight to UFA. that would put them in the same situation as the leafs with Matthews
