You realize those contracts are insured right? Gaborik for example is getting paid like, less than league min (I think it’s like 600k? Could be off a little). Nobody is giving up an asset higher than a 7th for you to take that, and Dubas has said they’re not playing that game anymore anyway

EDIT: Also, Calgary has zero interest in Kerfoot when we have 4 guys up the middle we like more, and Ottawa won’t reach the floor without Gaborik lol

Trading Gaborik hurts Ottawa. His salary is paid by insurance, so it’s free cap.

Contracts are insured PLUS LTIR has its own complications. This is a rare move that makes both teams worse

My understanding is that up to 80% is insured. Meaning that these 2 teams will save approximately 1M on each contract. With no hockey that is a lot of money to those 2 teams. If you want the compensation to drop to say a 4th that's fine. The point is the leafs can "buy" picks with this method and would be foolish not to.
