Other side of TML trade (JVR+ for Hamonic)

Created by: pundystar
Team: 2016-17 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 27, 2016

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Assuming the NYI choose to go the 7F/3D/1G route for the expansion draft they will likely move a D-man by the end of the year. Boychuk has to be protected due to his NMC, then I see them protecting 2 of Leddy/Hamonic/Hickey ... which makes one of them trade bait. JVR gives them a solid wing option for Johnny T and they protect Tavares/Ladd/JVR/Lee/Bailey/Nelson/Strome upfront from Vegas.

I don't really follow the Islanders so I'm just using the line combinations from Daily Faceoff with JVR added in.

Pundystar: Come June expansion the Isles may only protect 3 Dmen (as well most teams). Leddy, Boychuk and Pulock. I can see the Leafs making a deal for Hamonic then. More only the lines of "prospects" than JVR.
Let's say Corrado, Marincin and Johnson for Hamonic.

They could wait but teams will play hardball with them knowing their desperation to move someone or lose them for nothing in the draft whereas now they get back a top 6 fwd. Also JVR isn't part of the rebuild, he'll be close to 30 when his current deal expires in 2 years and looking for a payday. He's not going to get they payday from the leafs as the kids will be looking for money as well a couple season(s) later. So move him now and maximize the asset.

The reason I am reluctant to move JVR now, is there isn't great NHL LW depth especially goal scoring. So while your trade is good, I just gotta think the Leafs need JVR this season.

I agree with the depth issue on LW, and I like JVR, but watching the Leafs through the first few games offence isn't an issue D is. This gives them a chance to get a proven top 4 right hand shot D, on a good contract, and see what they have in Leivo/Leipsic/Rychel this season while they're not a competing team.

You're correct, maybe some younger guys need a shot....Johnson, Tishanov, Lindberg seem to guys who might even in the long term plans for the Leafs instead of Leivo/Leipsic/Rychel.

Whoever, but test the kids and solidify the D if the opportunity is there.
