Description
The NHL will go with an expanded roster this season and there will be some sort of cap relief to do this. I’m guessing a 10 percent spend over the cap for this upcoming season with some sort of luxury tax to recoup lost revenue. With the rumored “bubbles” you may see it expanded to 25-27 players. With the opportunity to switch out your rosters in between bubble timeframes.
Depending on what the AHL does for their season I think a full year with the Marlies for Robertson and more time for Lil and Sandin playing big minutes will help with their growth. The Dell signing tells me Dubas knows something about what the season may look like next year. And yes Marincin is garbage and is not an NHL Dman but he is slotted at the 8 guy for absolute emergency situations. No point having the young guys not playing

I have a feeling that would lead to a large revolt from the small market teams. Essentially free cap circumvention for the big market teams.

It's all speculation right now but I could see each team being allowed to have a taxi squad of players. Especially if there's no AHL season.

Big difference between having a taxi squad made up of guys on ELCs/2 way contracts and AHL contracts and just allowing teams to have an extra 8 million in cap space

Even if it’s a taxi squad there will be no clearing waivers. You will have to be cap compliant for the game but you will be able to carry an expanded roster that will have to be higher then the cap to make it worth.
Taxi squad was the “term” I was looking for this morning.

Yeah I think they will allow teams to carry more players, but force a need to declare their max 23 man roster (under the cap). Of course teams can choose to carry just 22 or 21 at a time if they so choose. If anyone is on a 1 way and stays in the taxi group beyond that, they need to be waived as per usual as if they were going to the minors. If nobody claims them, then they can be in the taxi squad and ready at a moment's notice for a call up. But the 23 max man squad should always be cap compliant to 81.5 mil.

Only fair that 1 ways staying over the cap in the taxi can be claimed. Otherwise we have a mini version of the issue that led to the cap in the first place. No way ownership agrees on that. Good luck arguing it to Ottawa, Buffalo etc.

With so much uncertainty I would think the nhl does not want players to be moving so much from team to team. Especially with the Canada/Us border situation and 14 day quarantine. So even if a team pulled a guy off waivers he wouldn’t play for 14 days.

The leafs offered Dermott 895k. If someone offers him 1.395M or above the leafs will let him walk and take the 3rd round pick compensation. NO way they pay him 2M. Obviously he didn’t sign the 895k offer sheet yet but he’s not gonna get more than 1M/year from Toronto. And he’s not arbitration eligible.

And Mikheyev is arbitration eligible and has a hearing next week I believe. He will probably win something like 1.5-2M a year

Teams would know that, and might still see it worth it. Have to leave it up to them to decide. And that is only if it is going from an American team to a Canadian team. This factor does not outweigh the unfairness of basically going to a 90 mil cap when everyone is spending to 81.5 max. That would be a complete breach of the current framework. A waiver system where players don't need to report to the AHL if they pass through is a much smaller, more sensible change.

I agree but I was basing Dermotts salary on what the Leafs paid Holl. In my opinion he looks at that contract and says I’m worth the same. Does Deott deserve 2 mil a year... probably not but I am thinking that’s the snag...

He’s gonna sign the 895k/yr offer sheet. I doubt he even nickels and dimes them up to 1M/yr. there is no possible way it gets to 2M/yr. he has no leverage. He can’t sign anywhere else unless they offer sheet him. He’s not arbitration eligible until next year. So he signs it and next year, goes to arbitration.

And Holl and Dermott basically play 2 different positions. Holl is a right-handed shot defenseman. Plays the right side. Way more valuable than Dermott and A LHD
