Buyout Strategy

Created by: Fafhrd
Team: 2020-21 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 6, 2020
Published: Nov. 8, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1. The Sabres would like to move money if they can, and Okposo's contract is a lot more than Boychuk is. Isles can buy him out and call it a day.

2. Yes, Ladd is on LTIR. And yes, I know people have said that he wants to keep playing, but let's be honest: he directly cost the Isles Game 2 of the ECF. His knees are shot and at some point he's got to think about the long-term. Robidas Island exists for a reason with Lou Lamoriello. Make him a coach or something to keep him in the game.

3. Devils are going to likely lose Palmieri in the offseason. The Isles could trade for him with prospects, picks, Komarov and Hickey- but only if they get Palmieri on a long-term extension. Isles don’t need to do this, though, they can just bury guys in the minors.

4. Sign Duclair and reunite him with Pageau. Or maybe go after Athanasiou. Or Brassard. Or Granlund.

5. For 2021-2022 the Isles have at least $16 million in cap space before they LTIR Ladd and lose either Leddy or Bailey to the Kraken in the expansion draft. More than enough to resign Beauviller, Pelech, Sorokin, and Palmieri (if they get him).

Sabres probably take it. Cut a year off the deal.

Dubinsky is going on LTIR, no reason to do the isles trade

1. Okposo buyout is going to screw us in the 3rd year and the isles would save more money burying boychuk in the 2nd year

2 . extending palmieri means we’d lose beau. He’ll also be 31 in the first year of his new deal. We don’t need any more 30 year olds on long term deals

Dubinsky is going to LTIR, and his contract is fully insured, so it’s not costing CBJ a penny.

Not going to want Komarov, they’d rather just take picks and prospects.

1. It's a short term vs. long term payoff. Isles could use the space now, rather than later.

2. Nah, Bailey or Leddy get moved to Seattle. That covers things.

Yeah but we get screwed in years 2 and 3. It’s a short sighted move. They would save under 2 mill this season. Not worth it

Bailey will not be taken by Seattle. He’ll be turning 32 with 3 years left @5 mill. In Arthur staples article , league execs think they will have a lot of interest in. Koivula, maybe even Aho.

Regardless, signing a 31 year old isn’t smart. He’s on a similar trajectory as ladd. We’re giving up two of our top 6 prospects AND a 1st to get him. Just horrible asset management - it’s the kind of move that can set a team back years - and I know hickey is included.

Removed that from the trade/buyout. Isles don't fully *need* it.

Seattle needs to hit the cap floor. The Isles won't have much else on their main roster to pick from.

Palmieri is going to be 30 next February. I'd sign him to a 2-3 year deal, possibly 4 and they won't have to break the bank to do it. Also, I fixed the trade out. I can include other draft picks if necessary, but I think two prospects will do it.

They will take 1 year deals to hit the cap floor, not 3 year deals, unless the player is younger than 30. . I don’t think Vegas willingly took any 30+ players with 3 year term.

Palmieri will get 5-5.5 mill x 4. So we would open Belmont with 8 out of 12 forwards 30 or over. Not a good strategy. Need to get younger.

Seattle will take what teams give them.

If Seattle has an option of Leddy, koivula, bailey, and Aho - they aren’t taking bailey, who’s on the decline. It’s better for them to take Leddy, who will have 1 year left and then they can sign better UFAs the following year.

And now we're back to what I originally said.

If Leddy gets taken by Seattle and we trade/sign palmieri, we will still have 8 out of 12 forwards 30+ . The league is getting younger and faster and palmieri will be the next James Neal. Neal had 25 goals for Vegas in his age 30 season. Signed a 5 year deal with calgary and scored 7 goals in 61 games the following season.

In 2 years palmieiri will likely fall off a cliff. Turns 30 in a few months and will be 31 in the first year of his new deal.
