Just keep your good players and get rid of the players that aren't as good as them.
Pretty simple roadmap here:
-Let Trouba and Kreider play out the year and build some value back up. Even with the contracts. 2 way 6-3 guys with speed who can play all situations will always be valuable on the trade market. Deal them both after the next season or so depending on Laff's growth.
-Sign Buch long term after this season.
-There's honestly too much smoke with Rangers/Eichel for it not to happen. Considering the financial situation, that means dealing Mika for a haul and then sending that haul to Buff with some secondary stuff for Eichel (think the Turris/Nashville portion of the Duchene deal).
-Let the kids play on D and grow them like Columbus 4-5 years ago.
-Use blocked younger guys like Howden/Hajek/Schneider/Pajuniemi as trade pieces to backfill your bottom 6 and LHD.
If all you do is let the kids play and clear out a bit of room for them, the team should be fine.
