UFA hunting

Created by: TrueNorth
Team: 2021-22 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 24, 2021
Published: Jan. 25, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Expansion Protection:

Scheifele, Connor, Ehlers, Dubois, Wheeler, Copp, Lowry, Morrissey, Pionk, DeMelo, Hellebuyck

Exempt:

Perfetti, Heinola, Samberg, Vesalainen, Gustafson

Exposed: Appleton, Harkins, Niku, Beaulieu, Stanley, Berdin.

Stastny is brought back as a team favorite. Ideally to help mentor Perfetti into that second line role.

That leaves just shy of $10M to hunt for a free agent. Or could the cap space be used to “rescue” another team like Colorado did with Devon Toews? Who would you target?

Putting this team together, I felt the greatest need would be a RHD who could be a PP QB. Is Erik Karlsson's contract untradeable? Perfect world would be Hamilton signing but I can't believe Carolina will let him get to free agency. Can Vatanen still fill that role? Does Ristolainen have that upside?

Jets are one of few "good" teams with cap. Not sure who they sign as UFAs, but I wouldn't put all the cap in one player. Is there a 4.5m Dman and 4.5m winger on short term deals that could really help the Jets next season.

One of Copp or Lowry will probably be lost to Seattle, im hoping they can work some magic to keep both

I would think that if they signed Hamilton to a big contract, they would trade Pionk, use that cap for a winger

I agree, considering there is likely to be a flat cap again. Hoffman, Cirelli, Granlund, Strome, Haula all signed for <$5M. Vatanen and Hamonic for $2M or less.

They are allowed to protect 7 forwards. Scheifele, Connor, Ehlers, Dubois, Wheeler and Copp are all but certain. Both Stastny and Lowry are UFA and would have to choose to sign in Seattle over returning to Winnipeg. I'm guessing that the Jets extend Lowry during the season and he will be their 7th protected forward.

Gonna guess that Lowry will have a hand shake deal in place with WPG and sign after the Expansion Draft. I assume we protect Harkins for the final spot with Seattle selecting either Appleton or Niku.

I have liked the play of both Appleton and Harkins so far this season.
