Like I said, you would still need to add a 1st round pick.

He has 1 year left, you won't get a 1st plus a 1st rd prospect unless hes extended

They’ll get a better return that Muzzin most likely. We’ll see, but he is a very attractive asset and can even have salary retained. A lot of teams would give up good pieces for two runs at a cup with Ekholm retained. And re-signing is still an option.

If they decide to trade him, it makes the most sense to trade him at the deadline to maximize his value.

True but in order to get to the stage whete they feel they have to trade ekholm they have to have a disappointing end to season with him, or at least thats how I feel

Unfortunately, I think the season is already disappointing enough to the point NSH should be sellers. NSH has Farrance and Davies that should be NHL ready next season on the left side too -- so they have some internal options for replacement (but a UFA, or in this case Leddy I suppose would work for 1 year to bring them up to speed). And if NSH gets a top 5 pick, they'll have another defenseman that likely isn't far away from NHL action. So this isn't a bad time to move on from Ekholm, if that's what they decide to do.

If they're thinking of moving him now like muzzin/mcdonagh I could come up with something more fitting

If it lowers his value to wait, then I don't know why they would.
