GMRH made comments about how he is thinking about the present and the future. He said he is open to making moves if it doesnt affect the future too much. I dont think our 1st is in play. I would love Mantha, but it doesnt seem like a realistic option at this point.

That's what he has said, yes. But I think acquiring young, established players with term is what they need to do to maximize their chances now. Any player drafted then is unlikely to be helpful for another 3-4 years.

Yes because no player has ever won their 1st cup after turning 30.

Here's the thing, Detroit and every other team isn't aiming for one single shot at a cup. They are aiming for a sustained window of being a good team. That's how you get a cup. It usually takes a few years. Look at Tampa. Look at Washington. Mantha has four years on his contract. During that time, Detroit is not going to be in their cup window. If all goes right, he will be in his 30s and on another contract when they are. You don't want to be the team that gives him a long-term deal in his 30s. We have seen it go wrong for many teams. The prefect example is what happened to Vancouver and all of its bad contracts interfering with its young core. Loui Eriksson went from an excellent underrated player to one of the worst contracts in the league at age 31. Yzerman is smart and likely knows that Mantha doesn't line up with a future window of success.

Detroit passes, Pettersson isn't much of an upgrade on LD, Legare isn't any upgrade on Goaltending then what we've in our system now and the last thing Detroit needs is more winger prospects when we already have an overabundance of them. Noway Yzerman accepts this.
