Mtl cup run 2016-2017

Created by: Blazingbat11

Initial Creation Date: Jan. 1, 2017

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
- First trade that needs to happen is Desharnais for Vrbata. While I'm not a fan of Vrbata, this trade sheds salary. He's also having a good year (24pts in 37gms so far) and at 1mil cap hit he's an great rental that can go up and down your lineup. Arizona might not want salary coming back, that's why I added the extra 5th round pick.

- Second trade is the acquisition of Cam Fowler. While I doubt Anaheim will give him up, this would be the price to pay.

- Third trade is a dream come true. A lot of teams will be trying for Duchene, but where Mtl has the advantage is that they have two really solid defensive prospects (Sergachev and Juulsen) that are exactly what Joe Sakic is asking for. I would much prefer to give up Juulsen, but other teams have similar prospects that Colorado might prefer. If the Fowler trade doesn't happen, switch Hudon and 2nd pick with a 1st.

Name the last team that mortgaged the future at the deadline and won the cup?

Pittsburgh, Chicago... Both teams have been shipping picks and prospects like candy over the past couple years, has worked out pretty good for them.

also note that Duchene and Fowler are both young players that would stay with the team for a long time.

I like it. They aren't exactly mortgaging the future like he said hey still have some top prospects and are acquiring young pieces in return. Montreal needs to go all in before Price's contract is up because his pay raise is going to complicate things even more.

Only thing i don't like about this is giving up Sergachev. While it's the price they need to pay, i'm not sure they're willing to

Anaheim is on a cup run of their own, So Fowler isn't getting dealt. And besides how many times does it need to be said that Anaheim doesn't need D coming back they already have an over abundance of D this doesn't help them.

Chicago and Pittsburgh built their core from top picks. Shipping off top prospects is a stupid idea.

SickFlow. You are correct, Chicago built their core around Toews, Kane, and Keith, but they also had to make acquisitions to become contenders: Patrick Sharp, Andrew Ladd (first cup run), Johnny Oduya, Antoine Vermette (Last cup run). Same goes for Pittsburgh. Phil Kessel, Patrick Hornqvist, etc. They had to pay top dollar for those players.

Montreal has their core. Price, Patches, Galchenyuk, and subb...I mean Weber. You have to do moves to help those guys out. And you gotta give something to get something. And Duchene is a big something.

I think the trades for fowler and duchene are both over-payments, and I don't like the idea of trading sergachev at all.

Bergevin has always made solid deals at the deadlines and I'm sure he will find the right players for this team and it won't cost the team its future. He got vanek for a 2nd and a busted prospect, and Petry for a 2nd & a conditional pick. Even Torrey Mitchell for a 7th was a steal.

I like the desharnais trade and the logic behind it. Probably one of the more interesting ones I've seen.

They are most definitely mortgaging their future, when price's contract is up he is going to get a raise. In order to stay competitive we need young players to step up. For example sergachev will be making less than $1 million for the next 3 seasons and they could resign him to a bridge deal as well. That's going to be very valuable when price signs his new contract.
