Description
Hear me out. Freddie remains on IR unless Campbell gets hurt. Once the Leafs acquire another goalie, Freddie hits LTIR until playoffs or one of the other goalies get hurt and hit LTIR. Come playoffs, whoever is the best goalie, plays. Don't know if Bernier is the right goalie for that matter, because the Leafs would give a lot to get him, but as well, they could dump Kerfoot's contract to Detroit because they have a lot of cap space, so it kind of works out for Toronto. Raanta is another goalie that could work in this scenario, perhaps Dubnyk too but I wouldn't trust him (much cheaper and easier to get tho). Oleksiak would be nice to re-sign nevertheless in the summer, especially if Seattle scoops up Holl.

As a non-Leafs fan, those Bernier and Oleksiak deals both seems like severe overpays. But maybe I'm missing something...

I wouldn't give up a second round pick for Bernier alone, let alone that package. He's having one good season, and he's a rental. Bad asset management. Alot to give up for Forsberg.

Keep in mind in the DET move you are dumping Kerfoot's contract, so you need to sweeten the deal. Bernier is likely gonna net the Redwings a second, and the Leafs need to get Kerfoot off the books. As for Forsberg, you get him next year too. He is a star, worth 2 firsts or equivalents, and likely an additional piece. If NSH is eating half of his salary, then you have to give more up.

The truth is that Liljegren was a 2017 1st round pick. He is great in the AHL, but hasn't done much for the Leafs at the NHL level, and cannot really crack the lineup. Sandin is better, and I just don't see Liljegren being in the Leafs plans for much longer. He is the most expendable Leafs prospect with a decent amount of value. Oleksiak is someone the Leafs could re-sign next season, especially if they lose Holl to Seattle. He is 6'5 255lbs. Big boy lol. The Bernier deal has a lot going to DET because the Leafs need to dump Kerfoots contract.

I know we are gonna have this debate again, but DET is getting a second and Hallander (B prospect) for Bernier and to eat Kerfoot's contract, a piece they could eventually move for something else if need be. Essentially you are acquiring 2 seconds/equivelents for cap space, that you could eventually deal for some other assets. Decent asset management, and its not like Detroit is pressed up against the Cap ceiling, or that the Illich family is losing money lol.

Just trade kerfoot somewhere else to a team that actually wants him. You can get your own assets back by trading him for a 3rd to a playoff team. The guy is a godamn used car salesman. And we are looking for that new car smell

Liljegren really hasn't been given that much of an opportunity at the NHL level (11 games in one season when the Leafs were going through a losing streak). Holl wasn't given that opportunity under Babcock, and he's a pretty good dman now. Another example is Carter Verhaeghe in Florida, a player the Leafs gave up on way too soon. Liljegren has too much skill ie puck moving and skating to not be in the NHL at least in a bottom pairing role.

Yea I get that, but he doesn't fit with the Leafs now, and likely won't for a while if anything. His value has regressed since he was a projected top 5 pick in 2016 going into 2017. Potential is there, but the fit isn't. Besides that, Leafs need an impact D man who can play physically, and who can play top 4 in case of an injury to another D man. Verhaeghe is a good example, but Tampa also passed up on him because the fit wasn't there. Oleksiak could in fact be in the Leafs long term outlook, if they can ink him to a reasonable AAV in the summer if Holl goes, and Sandin will emerge onto the scene as well. Keep in mind, we also have Topi Niemela who was WJC D man of the tourney, over all of the top-tier Canadian D men.

yeah I mean I'll be honest I'm still confused. Oleksiak can walk for nothing and Bernier is a below average goaltender, and you're worried about a guy making 3.5 mil that the majority of the league would love to have as a 3C?

I mean you do you, but there are certainly better ways to manage your assets.

Sorry this so bad on many counts. Teams just can't put players on LTIR and then pick the players they want for the playoffs.
A ridiculous overpay for Bernier. A silly premise to obtain Olesiak...thinking you can sign him next year. And Liljegren progression as been fine, and is the Leafs 7th Dman, and will needed next season
Think Brassard is the guy for the Leafs at 3C and if he is good as you think, why does Arizona trade him for so little.

Uhh I mean look at Kucherov in Tampa and how he is magically gonna be healthy by the playoffs. Leafs will have 11+mil in cap space, obviously with many places to fill including in net, but Oleksiak would fit well if Seattle scoops up Holl. Bernier is valued at a 2nd or equivalent, then factor in a contract dump for Kerfoot. Liljegren is probably 8th if Sandin is healthy, and his value has diminished year by year, after being a projected top 5 pick going into 2017. Its like Pitt holding on to Malkin when they could have dealt him in 2018, and is no worth half of that. Brassard has been good this season, and is a cheap alternative to play 3C. AZ gets a young Adam Brooks who has roster control, and a fourth like what do you think Brassard is worth lol. Jenner or Staal (if not acquired by MON td) or Dzingel would be marginally better at a steeper cost with retention needed.
