Fire Benning

Description
Benning's bad contracts have made competing for a Cup in the next few years a pipe dream, so the goal for now is to make the playoffs and get our young guys used to playing competitive games late into the season. We proved last year that this core can make some noise given the opportunity, and while I wouldn't count on it, I don't think winning a round or two with this team is out of the question.

Myers' contract is already negative value so getting rid of him is a priority. He's still a serviceable top 4, however, and Seattle won't have cap issues so they're a good fit for an expansion draft trade. Getting Montour in FA would allow us to give both Hughes and Juolevi a reliable, experienced partner. I think Edler is still a good NHL player despite his age and would excel in a 3rd-pairing role.

I don't hate the Pearson signing *that* much. The top six is fine as it is assuming Hoglander continues to develop. If Podkolzin continues the Canucks streak of great rookie seasons we've good a pretty good top nine.

Buying out Holtby costs us way less than it saves in cap space, and there are plenty of good backups available in FA. Pettersson and Hughes get matching long bridge deals, which seems like a win-win; VAN gets short-term security, EP and Quinn get to cash out well before they exit their primes.

Let me know what you think!

Walking Pettersson and Hughes to UFA even at these dollar values is worse than anything Benning has done in Vancouver.

It's not ideal, but this isn't the NBA. Star players rarely leave their teams in FA unless they're in a truly crappy situation. These deals put us in a position to contend before either hit UFA, which should mean we won't have trouble retaining them.

This is the worst of worse case scenarios. I would sooner see Benning run Vancouver for the next 10 years than see these contracts given out... especially since all already points to a bridge.

Bennings second half tenure is much improved on his first, and the worst of his contracts are of the forced hand of ownership. His reliability with RFA signings gives me trust to be optimistic in regards to what these two get. If the options are Fire Jim and get this, or Keep Jim and not get this, I'm keeping Jim.
