Why would Toronto & Anaheim give New Jersey a good player and draft picks for a lesser draft pick?

Not my post but I think its taking on the contracts to free up cap for those teams.
Player is the player but the picks move Jersey up is the thinking

Lupul is $5.3M x 2 which I think is too much to take on. Stoner only has a year left at $3.25 much more doable

The devils have a ridiculous amount of cap space and they can clear Clowe's contract after this aeason. Both trades are doable and the point of this post was to get more quality picks for cap.
