Initial Creation Date: Jun. 8, 2021

Description
Blake Wheeler's contract is going to be much like Louis Eriksson's contract in Vancouver. At least Wheeler's contract isn't buyout protected. His contract needs to go and no other team is going to trade for that contract unless the Jets retain some salary.

C'mon man!!! Logan Stanley is your best scorer from the blueline (last night, at least) and this is how you thank him? All kidding aside, Stanley is a big body who is rounding into form. This is not the time to trade him. It's the time to sign him to a decent contract that is long in term and team-friendly in $$$.

Don’t just buyout Wheeler it’ll only hurt the Jets as they need leadership that Wheeler provides

He is a big body yes. But a big body that can't skate at an NHL level. The NHL is too fast and guys are too shifty and too skilled for Stanley to keep up. A lot of the time in the defensive zone he looked lost out there. He wasn't able to find the right positioning. I was hopefully with him to be Buff-like. Big body who could shoot and knew where to be at the right time. Stanley can shoot and is a big body but the important piece the positioning is a huge concern. So him taking a step forward is good because hopefully his trade value goes up. Now would be the time to trade him.

Scheifele and Lowry can provide leadership. Wheeler is a great leader but this team is in it's prime or very close to their prime and Wheeler is on a steep decline in terms of his game. He has been great for the Jets but its time for that 34 year old man to move on and maybe go to a rebuilding team and be a leader to bring those guys up. Or to Seattle to have a leader piece to the guys they bring in for the expansion draft.

Stanley's just 23. His skating is still a work in progress. He'll never be a top-4 pairing, but he's a very serviceable young Dman for a team that needs a big body. He'll have a place in the league, at least until he loses a fight.

Detroit already have 4 newly signed bluechip prospects on LD + two more unsigned and will also be offered several veteran LDs on cap dump deals that they will be paid for.

Detroit also have enough goalie prospects.
