Description
How much do you guys think Zadorov is worth? After reading the athletics primer on the expansion draft I was reminded that IF the hawks left Zadorov exposed then Seattle would probably want to get a contract discussed with him prior to selecting him. In my title I asked a question, “How Much” and that question refers to 2 different numbers. The first being how much Zadorov is worth on the open market (keep in mind his QO is 3.2 million and he has arbitration rights). The second is at what cap hit and term Z becomes too expensive for Seattle to justify. What Do you guys think? would Z’s next contract act as a sort of built in protection? I believe it has been said that he was looking for a longer term contract after what he considered a good year. If these factors do scare Seattle away from Z then I think the protection slot would be better used on Stillman. In this post I also offer what I would be comfortable with as a long term contract for Z. I'll be frank, I don't think he is very good and I consider him to be more of a luxury player that can add physicality to an already good blue line as a 3rd pairing D. If Chicago did sign him with that role in mind he shouldn't be paid very highly. I doubt he would go for this type of deal but I did say that this is what I would be comfortable with. In a perfect world Z tries and fails to justify an expensive price tag and settles for a longer term contract after the expansion draft. It's comparable to a Scott Mayfield contract as both play 3rd pairing minutes.

In my opinion that’s too much to be paying for a 3rd pair D.

I would agree that hes a luxury player that makes a good team a great team, but I wouldnt say hes not very good. At points in the season, he was well and truly the best defenseman on the ice. He has his moments and he has that ceiling. But hes not going to constantly sit at that performance level. Good teams, where he may be the 4th best defenseman on the ice, can afford that because when hes at his peak its going to be fun times. For bad teams like us, we cant afford those off nights.

I am tired of the hawks trying to patch up the blue line by overpaying bottom pairing D by two million dollars and getting stuck with the contract when they play like bottom pairing D.

This is precisely the biggest worry with Zads, and I think more than likely you're right, this is what will happen.

The question is, could a real coach (Gallant, anyone?) figure out how to rewire the jumbled mess of parts that makes up his brain, figure out what circumstances allow him to have those flashes of great play, and then find him a partner that allows him to play to his strengths? This is a serious question, I really want to know and have NO idea how to diagnose this situation.

I... actually like Zads. I know. I shouldn't, he is a disaster so often. But I can't help feeling the right defensive partner and coach would help Zads be whatever it is Bowman thinks he got by barfing up Saad for him (like a ****ing toolbox). I feel like a much younger Hjalmarsson would've been that guy... I dunno...

I think this opinion speaks to how little Z fits the team, if we didn’t have like 3 other NHL level guys on the left side I wouldn’t have minded the Saad trade as much. Whatever the case may be it’s up to the player to play, we shouldn’t have to go find a Z specialist (and neither should anyone else for that matter) to get him to be competent at least most of the time.

On the surface, I agree with you. But what if there is a long term plan in place to replace the current sludgefest of a Dcore with faster players, and perhaps Zads fits into that in a way we just haven't seen yet? I'm not saying I endorse that idea, just that it has been bandied about by some of the talking media heads. He's part of a "plan."

(frankly the ****ing plan should've been to trade that Beaudin pick to Detroit to move up and take Quinn ****ing Hughes, but I digress)

I do recall how bad and out of sorts Johnny Oduya was when he first got to Chicago, took him some time to adjust to his role, but when he and Hammer got on the ice in 2013, ****in' nothing got by those guys. I guess my point here is that I really, REALLY hope there is a longshot plan in place for Zads like this... Probably not though, haha... ha... harumph.
