Next Year ft Dougie

Created by: VividCHARLOT
Team: 2021-22 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 23, 2021
Published: Jun. 23, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Seattle expansion List:
Gallagher (F)
Toffoli (F)
Anderson (F)
Kotkaniemi (F)

Weber (D)
Petry (D)
Edmundson (D)
Chiarot (D)

Price (G)

Assuming Seattle doesn't pick a UFA, they have a choice between Drouin, Allen, Lehkonen, Kulak, Byron.

If Drouin is not picked by SEA, he gets traded to a small market for picks.

All UFAs are signed after the expansion draft.

Dougie is a stretch. Will probably want Pietrangelo money, but is a bit injury prone. Hoping the good MTL run and 7x8,5 gets it done. Allows us to use Weber 18-20 mins in the regular season, so he can play healthy come playoff time.

Byron is traded after season 21-22 with 1 year remaining to his contract, giving us around 11M to sign Suzuki/Romanov/Evans. Allen could also be replaced by Primeau at this point, for an additional 2M.

Alternatively, we could pay a bit more to trade Byron this summer (though I think his playoffs may render him somewhat valuable to some playoff teams looking for experience and leadership on their bottom 6) and sign someone like Blake Coleman for that 2nd line with KK and Andy, slotting down Armia and Lehk to the 3rd and 4th lines, respectively.

That D- Core definitely is the best in the league... Why am I not a Habs fan, instead I'm a be-leafer

I wonder the exact same things. Habs fans are having the time of their lives and us Leafs fans are devastated yet again.

To be fair, it would be very entertaining to see them try to extend Romanov, Evans and Suzuki after this...

suzuki will get 5-6 mil easy, evans is like a 1-2 mil guy. Romanov is a question mark, because this is his first season.

For sure. Issue I see is that you're looking at say $8-10 mil in extensions for those guys, and only clearing $4-5. Obviously you can make other moves, but it would be awfully tough to swing it all.

Suzuki probably gets 6M on a 4-5 year deal, but I think both sides are going to be looking for a 8 yer deal, most likely around 7-8M. Evans won't get more than 1,5M. Romanov is the question mark depending on next season, but with Byron and Allen caps off the books, we're left with around 3,5M for him, which would most likely be enough for a bridge deal.

For sure. Then there's Caufield. I don't disagree with trying to sign Dougie, I just think it's tough sledding for the next couple of years.

I doubt this would happen and it would put us in cap trouble once we have to sign Suzuki and Romanov(he might be cheap) but I still wouldn't mind it, Would have one of the best d core in the league with one of the best Goalies in the league to back them up

By the time Caufield signs his next deal, we can hope that the cap will slowly start ascending. Also, Armia's 2 year deal would be expiring and not be re signed, with Ylonen who should be a full time nhler at that point. Toffoli and Edmundson will also have only a year left on their deals. Caufield would certainly be hard to sign while keeping Toffoli, but Edmundson is expendable at that point, assuming Guhle can replace him. Our cap hit would be tight, but more manageable that VGK, TBL and TOR, IMO.

I also don't really bank on Weber to play out his entire contract, so we save a full 7,8M if he retires early, since the cap penalty will be going to NSH.
