Offseason Cap space check-in

Created by: sound_arguments
Team: 2021-22 Chicago Blackhawks
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 4, 2021
Published: Jul. 4, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I'm wondering what cap space looks like -- either to facilitate a trade for someone like Jones or to take on bad contracts for assets.

Obvious unknowns: expansion draft, whether they use LTIR on Shaw or Seabrook, salary for RFAs, whether they decide to move guys like Strome and Connolly, which of the 4 veteran D-men they keep (no way they keep all four of Keith, De Hahn, Murphy, Zadorov, especially if they are intent on adding Jones or another legit top-pairing D).

I'm thinking they move Strome and if they manage to deal Keith, they'll wind up retaining salary. At that point, they may not move any other D-men. If they wind up with Shaw on LTIR but not Seabrook, this would leave them with about $7 - 9 M in cap space, depending on what they pay guys like Kampf and Suter (if at all).

If they move Keith AND De Hahn, and find someone to take Connolly off their hands, then that could give them $12 M or more to play with.

I would like to see someone other than Bowman making these decisions, but if we can't be rid of him for hockey reasons, maybe it will happen for non-hockey reasons . . . just take JC with him.

We have a lot is the answer. Seabrook is LTIR and it looks like Strome and Kieth are going to be traded at some point, probably dehaan too if seattle doesn't just take him

Oiler fan here. From a Chicago point of veiw what do you see an Oiler deal for Keith looks like? is there any rumors out there in Chicago. I know what we here in Edmonton as rumors but of course those are deals that benifit the Oilers maybe more so than Chicago.

If you were to deal Keith to Edmonton what does that trade look like. I've been looking for a Chicago fan's perspective.

I'm the same guy you just asked in the other thread and stand by what I said. Every Oilers fans post of the Kieth trade is terrible for the hawks. Always benefit to the oilers in cap space and a 2nd pair dman but nothing for the hawks, other than caleb jones I guess, who you guys will lose to Seattle if we don't take him anyways

Jones very likely will be lost to expansion but a Keith trade before expansion causes some issues for the Oilers as well. Larsson hasn't signed yet and if Keith is traded for Keith wpuld be protected leaving a Larsson signing until after expansion.
I wouldn't make a deal for Keith at full AAV simply because I think you can find an adequate 2LD option for much less and the Oilers need to improve in other areas.
I keep coming back to the Keith trade because Holland loves old guys and the people talking about it in Edmonton are pretty plugged in so I see it as a foregone conclusion. I personally think Seattle would be a better landing spot for him. Either The Hawks leave him exposed and Seattle takes him or after expansion Seattle has the young player(s) needed for the trade without the need for Chicago to take back a bad contract. Hell.they may even have Jones to offer.

Keith is no longer a legit top-pairing defenseman, but I think he has decent value as a #3 or #4 playing 16-20 minutes a night, instead of 23-25 as the Hawks have been doing. I could see them eating salary to make his deal make sense for that kind of player. But keep in mind also that his actual salary is far below the cap hit . . . He's only due $3.5 M over the next two years. So they'd want a return and not just a treat this as a salary dump -- in fact, Bowman's been saying he wanted to utilize cap space to pick up assets.

So I think it depends on how the salary back and forth works out. I could see them taking back a salary like Neal's and a 1st rd. pick, with maybe other picks and players included to even out any differences. But I'm sure the expansion draft complicates the whole picture.
